how big can a yorkie get I am new to YT and I am also a new yorkie owner. I first bought a male his name is Mickey and he looks like all the photos you see of yorkies. He is 3.4 lbs and is a great dog. Then I bought a female that was supposed to be 5 to 6lbs. She is now 8 mo. old an is 8.9lbs her name is Alexa and she is a sweet heart. When she was 5mo old she tried to nurse the baby kittens. Anyway she does'nt look anything like Mickey and I was worried that maybe she was a crossbreed. I have papers that says she is full blood but I have to admitt that I was not able to see her parents. I have a photo posted here if someone could take a look and tell me what they think. Thank you Alexa and Mickey |
I am not sure on the crossbreeding issue you have, but yorkies are to be under 7lbs, that doesn't mean they won't be over that. I have seen litter mates grow up and there be a big difference in there weight. Mary |
Well my Roscoe is 10 pounds and I know there are a TON of people with bigger Yorkies on here that are purebred. If you want to show or breed, yes they should be 7lb or less, but if not, it is just more to love. :) We lovingly call them teapots here! :) Oh and WELCOME!!! :welcome4: |
I had a yorkie that was 10 lbs and yes they can be bigger. The yorkie breed originated from breeds that were much bigger than the breed standard of 4-7 lbs they are today. From the picture on your profile page I would guess that Alexa is a full bred yorkie. It's always wise to see a pups parents before buying; I'd guess that either one of them was on the larger side OR they were bred from lines with larger than standard size yorkies, OR every so often a bigger than average yorkie will pop up in a litter. But any way you look at it.............there is just more to love. |
~The picture of your yorkies on your profile look purebred to me. I have a big boy who is 8.5 lb and 1 year old and he is a purebred yorkie. His parents and grandparents were all between 4 - 4.5 lbs. So I'm guessing one of the great grandparents were big. Welcome to Yorkie Talk. :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
They look like Yorkies but I'm not exactly an expert...I asked a similar question when I first came on here. If you look around here you'll see there are many Yorkies that don't really fit the description of a Yorkie but as I've learned there are way too many people breeding Yorkies that shouldn't be bred at all and that's how this question is coming up more than it should. One of my pups is now almost 10lbs and just about 6 months old. I wish people that don't have breed worthy pups would just stop breeding them and let the people who do have breed worthy Yorkies capitalize...do us and the Yorkie breed a favor! Yes, everyone still loves their dog but wouldn't it be sweet if all Yorkies look the way they should ;) Save us newcomers some guess work... |
Thanks to everyone I want to thank everyone for there replies. Alexa is my little sweet heart and you are right if she was 20lbs I would'nt care. She has helped me through some hard times. You see last year I was on vacation, I was approched by a man that led me to beleive that he was having car trouble, as I was trying to help out he shot and robbed me drug me into the bushes and left me for dead. I got Alexa just after I got out of the hospital and beleive me was so much comfort and company for me as I was disabled for 8mo. She was a big factor in my rehab. Anyway has a very big part of my heart. |

What an awful ordeal your went through Keith. Glad your story has a happy ending. Welcome to YT. Your baby looks all Yorkie to me. What a cutie she is too. Both your babies are. Yorkies come in all sizes, shapes and no two really look alike. IMO. When Buddy was around 1yr old he looked different. Something about his face I thought but knew he was full Yorkie. Today he's a big boy, 16lbs of him. LOL You never know. Enjoy and I'm glad the two of you found each other. |
Someone on here has a 22 lb one. Thats the biggest Ive heard of. I have one that is 11 lbs |

Keith, I just want to agree with others, your babies are both adorable and both look like yorkies to me! I've got two big yorkies, 13.5 and 17 lbs.:) More to love. Also, I'm so sorry to hear about what happened. Glad to hear you are doing well and the guy is in prison. |
