For those of you considering breeding
 

Well, my Maggie May had her babies! Let me tell you though, you can research til you're blue in the face. You can read every thread on this site. You can buy all the necessary whelping supplies. But you can't predict Mother Nature.
Maggie went into labor on Tuesday evening. One bubble out.....uh-oh now 2 bubbles out. Talking to Mary on the phone. She sent me straight to my vet. THANK GOD! Long story short. Emergency C-section. One puppy born with his intestines on the outside of his body. They put them back in. So far he is a survivor. Time will tell. He's made it 38 hours. Maggie has 3 beautiful boys. She's eating well. She's nursing them and taking care of them like she's done this her whole life. She's panting and hot (we are keeping the heat lamp on of course). She is in my bedroom with me, so my husband is a couch sleeper for now. The first night home I did not go to bed. I made sure each puppy nursed every two hours.
The reason for my post is this. If you are thinking about breeding. Think and think and think and then just let the professionals do it! I have been a basket case on the inside. I am staying calm for Maggie and taking care of her around the clock. She is my soul mate and I love her to death! I will be much more excited about the babies after time has passed and I know they've survived. I am just a wreck praying for them. I guess at this point I'm just a little paranoid, but wow! What an ordeal! If it wasn't for Mary on the phone, what could have happened! I don't even want to think about it!
Hopefully, this will discourage someone who thinks I just would like to try it.

Oh, and I forgot to say. I have to give the little puppy shots, every 8 hours. Me! I have to administer the shots! I am not a vet or nurse. Wow!

Thank you for your post!! Things like this is why Muffy and Buddy went to the vet asap. I could never go through something like that.

Your post lists many of the exact reasons why I do not, and could not, breed. To breed correctly takes much more strength, courage and stamina than I will ever have (not to mention the training and knowledge needed).

I hope those who are considering breeding their babies 'at least once' will see this and reconsider.

Thank you for telling this story and making me more at peace with my logical vs. emotional decision not to breed and have my girls spayed...

CONGRATULATIONS!!! on the pups. I strongly agree with you and send HIGH FIVES to the Professional Breeders! It is a VERY stressful and delicate situation. Mary also assisted me with the whelping of my 5 pups approximately 3 weeks. Luckily I had a VERY easy time compared to you!!! I pray for your little guy. I will say my pups are just over three weeks and the worrying isnt so bad as the first week. I worried day and night, took extra time off work etc. My Bella Mia is my baby!!! Her puppies are growing on my family daily and I do not see how we will let the 5 pups go!!!!! We are keeping one but I will greatly miss the others even though I will be able to see them it will not be the same. Good Luck getting through this week!! Mary is wonderful at what she does and very calming and patient. I appreciate her knowledge and follow her advice as closely as I can and all is well.

Day 3
 

Just wanted everyone to know, so far all three puppies are surviving. Gaining weight each day. I am looking forward to going to the vet tomorrow (even though it's for dew claw and tail docking) just for his reassurance that they are doing well.
I noticed Maggie didn't want to eat one of the little guys' poop. I went to pick it up, it was brown in color, but smeared on the blanket yellow. I've read that isn't good.

So glad your vet managed to save your little one. I had the same situation 15 years ago and the only solution back then was to put him to sleep. Things are so much better today.

I know what you mean! It's not as easy as some people think, is it?!

OMG! We just got back from the vet's office a little bit ago. Tail docking and dew claw removal. It was horrible! I felt soo sorry for the babies! Maggie was as stressed on the way home as I've ever seen her! Why we dock their tails is ridiculous!
Maggie and babies are resting now, but WOW, what an ordeal! She doesn't even want to eat right now.
Once again, HATS OFF to the professional breeders! THis is too traumatic for me!:eek:

I was afraid to read your post....I knew you were going to the vets today for this procedure. But, reading your last post on your suture boy.....I was leary.


Oh my, you took Maggie with you.....I wish I'd remember to tell you not too. It does stress mom's out. I usually put my girls outside to exercise, so that can't hear anything.

Make sure you get her to eat, even if you hand feed her.

I read what you write and smile because I was exactly like you are. I WORRIED about the pups and me Bella. I thought the tail docking was horrible and we had one little guy cry ALL night long!!! He was only comforted if we held him. She will eat again. She is probably just concerned about her babies now. Our pups are just about a month old and it is much more relaxed feeling. We are even enjoying the pups and their antics! It does get much better!

Maggie ate her egg. I had already hand fed it to her and then I checked your post. I took Maggie with me to the vet's because he wanted to check her, I guess because of the C-section. Maggie was fine the entire time we were there. It was just the car ride home with the babies crying that stressed her out.
It does amaze me that the babies are relaxed and nursing like normal.


The little guy with the suture needs Betadine put on his suture 2X a day, but other than that, he should be o.k. The vet wants to see him next Saturday to make sure the suture healed.

It does get easier. Wait until their eyes open and they take their first step. You're going to forget about the rest. Wait till you see Maggie teaching them everything from where there position is in the pack, piddle pad training them, and disiplining them.....It's the most marevelous thing to watch them grow. During that time, hubby and I forget about TV, we have live entertainment in our bedroom (the pups and mom):D
