Breeding Hi all. I am new to this forum. I have a small male about 3 pounds that I was wanting to breed. What are the procedures to accomplish this. I am only interested in using him as a mail stud. He is CKC registered. Any advise would be great. Thanks |
Hi, welcome to Yorkie Talk. Breeding dogs is a huge responsibility. Most people have their own stud dog or they will use a experienced male. If you have any specific questions you might want to post in the Breeder's Section since that is where you will get the most advise. CKC registered studs are not as sought after as AKC registered studs. How old is your male? |
I think he is too small to breed. The breed standard is 4-7 lbs. IMO |
He is undersized. The Continental Kennel Club is not a recognized bona fide registry for purebred dogs. A male or female in any breeding program should be among the best and should be contributing to the betterment of the breed by producing progeny. Breeding just because you can, ie have breeding rights, is not a good reason to breed. One that small at that age, I would worry, He should have BA and a general blood panel to be sure kidney/liver function is normal. Often they can be unusually small due to a health issue, some of which cannot be tested for. |

Just make sure you are there when breedings take place as my boy is 2.5lbs. and I hold him on my girls. I let him do his thing and then when they tie I grab and hold him on. It takes a while sometimes 30 min. Mine have all been tested and such. They are all healthy and no health issues. They all came from long lines of small healthy Yorkies. I'm pleased when people come on here to ask advice prior to taking steps. However, it does bother me when someone comes on and their first post is about breeding. |
When I see a new person post I like to ask a few questions first and get a little more information before I hand out to much information. As in the case of this person they have not been back on since they posted the question. If I see that someone else has posted good information and asked questions and the OP is not responding then I just don't get involved. It seems like many times we just end up talking to each other. |
I asked this question once before and got my head bit off  but the answers someone gives can help with the answers people on here give. It will tell you how much research someone has already done or not done. It will tell you what they are willing to do for the "betterment of the breed". |

We have plenty of dogs born in this country everyday, we have plenty of dogs given to rescue or animal control on a daily basis and we have plenty of dogs dying due to overpopulation so in my opinion people really need to be committed on why they are breeding. I belong to a breed club so I am not opposed to breeding but it must be for strong reasons. |
