Help!!! I can't get mom to drink water I am having a hard time trying to get the mom to drink water. I am giving it to her from my hand out of the bowl and slowly moving my hand down until she drinks the water but that trick is not really working anymore. The previous owner suggested putting the Esbilac in the water and I did that and it worked for a minute. I am running out of ideas, here babies are 8 days old, she still has milk but it seems like it is starting to dry up. Does anybody have any suggestions???? |
I would use a syringe if needed. Did you try holding the bowl up to her? Also, you may want to give her some nutri-cal. |

Yes, I did, she turns her head. Can I pick up the nutri-cal at the pet store? |

Yes you can nutri-cal at the pet store. Good luck. You can also feed her some canned food, which she will get some liquid out of. You can also soak her food in water. You can give some pedialyte too. |

I am feeding her canned food, its all she will eat. I can't get her to eat dry food. |
Try grinding up the dry food real fine then add the canned food to it, mix it well and make some little dog food meat balls and see if she will eat them. Canned food is mostly water so she is probably just not thirsty. How often is she eating the canned food? What type of canned food are you feeding her and what kind of dry food do you have available? |

She is eating canned food 3 to 4 times a day. basically whenever she is hungry since she is nursing. I am feeding her ceasers (because that is what they were giving her but trying to wean her off of it), however, I am mixing it with a higher standard of puppy food Blue Buff and Eukanuba. I also added some chicken broth to her food this morning and she gobbled it up. But won't drink out of the bowl but as you pointed out, she may not be thirsty. |
You got plenty of good advices already so I have not much to add. Just make sure that one way or the other she is drinking. oh ya Lucy like the drink from a glass and she have to be in her whelping box to do it. Good luck |

The first couple of days Bella would only drink a little bit of water from a SMALL bowl held by one of us. Except by the 3rd night I could hear her quickly drink from the small bowl but NEVER during the day. We also gave her water soaked dry food mixed with wet food. That and time seemed to do the trick. Now she eats and drinks like a horse. We leave food and water out 24/7 just next to the whelping box. Good Luck!:animal36 |
Did you talk to your vet about this? Is she drinking yet? Our mom's do not leave the whelping box for the first 3 to 5 days when we are around and i give them water in the droper.... but after that they are fine. I would call the vet and talk to him. They can give her fluids if you do not know how to do this, subcutaneous fluids i mean. But they can also check her to make sure she is not SICK! that would be my main concern at this point... if she is not drinking at all ... an infection... or something else going on... You had plenty of good advices, the chicken broth is a very efficient trick to make them drink. If you tried them all and it still did not work i would definetelly call the vet and mention. |
