Puppy Care Packages... does anyone do this? Suggestions? My name is Amber, I'm from Columubs, Ohio and this is my first post! :) I'm new at this breeding thing, but I've done lots of research and I've owned yorkies for over 12 years now. One of my females had her first litter and I've got 1 of the 2 puppies sold. I'd like to send home a puppy care package with each puppy. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to include? I was thinking including some wee-wee pads, small sample bag of puppy food, a blanket or plush toy with Mommy's scent and some baby shampoo (I bathe my dogs in baby shampoo). Any suggestions would be appreciated!:aimeeyork Thank You! |
Sounds like a great idea! I was considering the same thing. Im not a breeder but I wanted to offer first time pet owner a starter kit. Good Luck :) |
1 Attachment(s) I love getting the puppy gift baskets ready! I change it a little for each litter but it usually include: A bag of Royal Canin puppy food, their vet book, 2 designer outfits, some pee pads, 3-4 toys,a bag of dental treats, a blanket, a puppy photo album and some helpful information. |
Great ideas!! I would also like to provide a health guarantee with the puppies. I reviewed your site Chantal... and I like how your purchase agreement is written. You really are very organized and very professional! Awesome! Anybody else have ideas and/or suggestions on care packages? |
~I give a dog bed, blanket, soft toy, puppy food, shampoo and pictures of baby, mommy and daddy, and sometimes a book on yorkies (if I get to petsmart before the puppy goes to their new home). :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
I give a bag of food, toys ,a bed I make and a small blanket, treats and information on puppy care. I always call with a follow up on the puppy after a day or two to answer any questionsthey may have and just to see how they are doing |
Baby Book (Contract/guarantee, instructions, general info on puppy and adult care, pedigree, pics of parents and baby from the time it's born until it goes home). AKC registration List of websites Vet check papers. NutriCal Food Cozy Cuddler (put it in with momma and puppies the night before so it'll have their smell) Puppy Harness Tooth Paste & Tooth Brush Toys Wee Pads Paper Towels and poop bags Baby Wipes. |
It's great that you give "extras", another good thing would be--a single dose of heartworm medication w/information on heartworms(I bet you can get brochures from your area vet clinics), that way the new owner will hopefully gain the knowledge and keep their new baby on preventative. |
I have totally enjoyed making my puppy packs. I bought nice big shoulder bags and inside I have included each puppies "Puppy album" binder which has sections inside including PICTURES- a pic of mom and dad, and brothers and sister, a pic of mom with all the pups, pics of the pup from birth till it goes home, CONTRACTS- a copy of the deposit contract and puppy contract, FOOD-Receipes for home cooking, lists of foods good for your puppies and foods that are dangerous, HEALTH- Health sheet from the vet which includes tail/dewclaw dates, shots given etc, health sheet from me that includes weights from day they were born till ??, the date and time they were born, what number in the birth sequence, markings etc. WEBSITES-A list of websites to reference including YT, CONTACT-My contact info INFORMATION- Supplies to have at home for a new puppy (I am giving each new Mommy a copy on their first visit of the supplies sheet) I wrote to Chicken Soup For the Dog Lovers Soul (which is what I am feeding) they were VERY generous in sending 2 cases of samples of puppy food so I am including numerous samples of puppy food and the product info sheets. A toy A receiving blanket that I will stick in with everyone the night before they all go home so they smell like the pups family. I have enjoyed all of the puppy hoopla so far. I am always excited for the next stage. |
I think puppy packages are such a fantastic idea! Especially for new owners to yorkies. I think it's so important to include Nutrical bc when it's needed, it's needed NOW. Love the idea of including a little harness. I think it'd be great to include a short, easy "cheat sheet" - like bullet points that say -- for example, things like -> never use a collar for leashing yorkies due to CT vulnerability, do not change food or add any new food for at least 3 wks, never allow a vet to give rabies the same day as any other shots, signs of hypoglycemia are ___, don't allow yorkies alone w/ very young kids or big dogs....etc etc...you get the idea. And then, I also love Mardelin's idea of websites - like Dr. Dodd's vaccine schedule site, and others. |

You are right about the NutriCal. However, I do included instructions on it's administering. If over done it can lead to Diabetis. I add a copy of Dr Dodd's Vaccination Protocol. As well as my preferance, as their breeder on rabies administration, lyme, corona. Supplying as much information to them as possible. My baby books read like a copy of War & Peace....started out small, but has grown over the years. I pretty much don't place my pups in families with young children or with large dogs. |
1 Attachment(s) I love making up puppy packages for the new owners!! I always think of someone new each time. Here is what I usually put in mine... Food both hard and soft Treats as well as chewing treats/toys Toys Atleast one outfit, usually a few Blanket Pads Food and water dish Nutrical Bellyband or diaper Harness and leash depending on if I can find one Baby book which has baby pictures, vet records, registration, guarantee and a booklet on caring for your puppy. |
Wow!!! What awesome and caring breeders we have on here! You guys ae so kind to go out of your way to make a new owner feel more knowledgeable and lucky. So very sweet.... :D |
First of all : WELCOME :D I think it is a lot of fun to put the puppy starter kits together and personalize it. You have some great examples here. One thing that i do not think it was mentioned is about the food you are feeding the puppies... sudden change of food can cause diarrhea, but you can order from the manufactures a brochure or a folder with important information on why you choose this food and why do you recomend it. I have my choice of food, but i am not partial to advertising in here ... So contact the brand of food you are currently feeding and check on what tipe of coupons, free food samples and brochure information they are willing to provide you FREE OF COST to you to pass along in your puppy starter kit ! xoxo |
That is a really nice and helpful thing to do!!...Out of four breeders only one did this and it was awesome!....She gave me a bag with goodies and a baby blanket and a little stuffed teddy, both with moms scent on it.... It's now four years later and he still sleeps with his blanky and teddy....The teddy is looking a little ragged now from all his chewing and humping.... |

I try to make up a big bag of goodies. Enough stuff so they will be set for a while and not have to buy anything. |
I like to give a 5lb. bag of Canidae ALS, a couple cans of puppy food to mix with dry, shot records, health guarentee, my vet number, phone number to SNAP a low cost or no cost Spay/Neuter, Microchip and reg. form, tube of Nutri-cal, blanket, bed, fashion collar w/ bling name, copies of parents pedigrees, AKC form, pack of pee-pee pads, and informational forms. My phone number and e-mail. I don't know if I left anything else out. Oh and food and water dish. :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
I am not a breeder yet, but soon I will be and then I plan to include the following things in the puppy care package: A pink/blue blanket with mommy's scent on it, Some pre-made home cooked food (frozen), home cooking recipes, nutritional supplement, collar with tag, a toy or two, washable pee pad with a little pee on it (to show the new puppy where to go), a bow or two (colours according to gender), care sheet with info on everything, recommendation to join YT, album with pictures of mommy, daddy, siblings and puppy, food bowl, maybe an outfit or two (I make them myself), nutrical, and a few more surprises. I wish I had received a puppy care package with my two. That would have been nice. |
I think these are a great idea, they will definitely make the purchase much more desirable. I know some times people pay alot for the pup and then to think of all the little extras that they would have to spend, this would really help out and who doesn't love gifts! :p |

What a great idea! That would help me to make my decision! It costs a lot to buy a pup and then to supply all there needs immediately, this is a great starting point for any new owner! |
I know that this isn't really part of the puppy care package. But I send out Christmas cards from the puppy's mom and dad. And then Birthday cards with a gift cert. from a Petsmart or Petco (whatever is in their area). That is just a little something extra to let the family know that I am still here and I care!;) |

1 Attachment(s) It really depends on if they are picking up the puppy or shipping. I always have the papers, copy of the signed guarantee, food, shot records, ear taping guide sometimes, info on misc things like heartworm, microchips, toy, blanket and pee pads. This is the last thing I made for the little biewer girl that was picked up :) It's a pee pad cake! Her brother that went to CA (hand delivered!) I sent the cutest matching camo harness, toy and blanket - soooo cute! Of course he didn't get a pee pad cake as it would have fell apart, but he still got the pee pads and they were the ones they were used to while they were here :) Sometimes they will get an outfit or harness or whatever I pick up for them. I have never gotten anything except a blanket when I have gotten a pup and I know how much I would adore it if I got extras! |
I forgot to say the base of the cake is the blanket, then the pee pads, two toys and little bags of treats are around the first layer :) |
OMG how wonderful of you all to think of all of this. What a way to make getting that baby super special. The only thing I could think of, and it may have been mentioned but I missed it is a schedule of the babies day. when they eat and potty etc. It may be helpful for the first timer. |
