4 week old babies and potty Ok, not sure if this is a silly question or not but here goes anyways... I have never had a litter do this before so not sure if it is a normal thing for Yorkies or not. Honey's babies are 4 weeks old today and they are in a large playpen similar to an x-pen but the one for real babies. In the pen I have thier bed, paper on the floor food and play area and a potty patch. They will use the potty patch but seems they just go any'ol where. Not expecting the moon and stars but they will just wake and pee right in the bed it seems without even trying to go outside of the bed even though there is a lot of pee in the paooty patch when I clean it as well so they are definately using it. Is there something else I should be doing as I am desperate to not allow them to get in the habbit of peeing in thier bed. Any thoughts would be seriously appreciated. Kim :) |
They are not that great and have no real idea at 4 weeks. Just keep the bedding SUPER SUPER clean so they know that is the "clean" area and not the potty area :) LOTS of laundry at 4 weeks and on. LOL |
Yep, that's what I did too. I just kept changing the blankets on their bed constantly. I bought up all the baby blankets at one weekend of garage sales that I could find. :) Then they just gradually caught on. They would not potty by their food bowls and not by their bed. Everything else was covered with pee pads. Everyone that took a puppy at 12-15 weeks reported back that they were already house-trained. I felt like they were here, but was not sure if they would make the transition, but they did with few accidents. I kept the last one, Rocky and he is doing great! The only one I have to worry about is Ben -- he still is marking occasionally. It is getting better but he may lose a couple of things soon if he does not stop. |
Their behavior is perfectly normal for 4 week old puppies. They are just learning to walk. Are your puppies walking well or are they little butterballs that don't walk well yet? I find that overweight puppies have a harder time venturing away from their bed. I think if you give them another week they will be doing much better. |
Thanks ladies! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong and really want them to be able to leave here with good manners and a strong foundation for potty training. :) |
Don't expect miracles, they're only 4 weeks. Usually my moms wee pad train their babies. But, usually they don't quit going in their play pen on wee pads, until I start bringing them out to a play area in the family area at about 8 weeks of age. That's when mom really starts doing their training. What I do is just line their play pen with washable wee pads, change them about 4 times a day. |
I don't expect miracles for sure, just just didn't think they should be going right where they sleep. It has been quite some time since I had my Maltese litters but remember them moving from where they sleep to the pad right out of the bed so was just checking to make sure I was doing everything right. They will move toward the edge of the bed sometimes and often leave the bed but then sometimes not. They did great today because I only had to change the blanket in the bed once and it only had one spot. :) If they continue to do it in the bed I will just change it more and more often, I know they will get it eventually. Exactly my experience as well. At four weeks don't expect any miracles. They will get better the cleaner you keep it and as they get older and start to venture out of their bed they will start to potty out of bed. My little buggers at 8 wks started to cry to go potty outside. They will stay clean in the crate for at least a couple of hours. I put them out and they all venture out in the yard following their moms and going potty. It is so amazing to see what they learn!:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
