Need help with bottle feeding
 
Well my Daisy had to have an emergency spaying yesterday. It all started Tuesday evening, she was looking a little depressed so I took her temp and it was 103. This was around 8pm and the vet's office was closed so I called first thing in the morning and they took right away. She had a bad infection in her uterus, pyometra. The vet said this was uncommon and normally seen in older females who weren't breed and not spayed. So here is the issue I now have. She has stopped producing milk so I must bottle feed them. I have been unable to get them to suck on the nipple. I purchased a puppy bottle and nipple. Does anyone have any get advice or tips on how to get the little ones to suck.

I never used a bottle... I would get a syringe and fill it to the allotted amount on the formula directions and give it to them slowly. I also warmed it... They are so little that sucking is too hard on them and they tire out before they can actually get their little tummy's full. Also do not feed them on their backs formula can go into their lungs.... hold them like they are nursing from their mama... on their bellies. They need to be fed every 3 to 4 hours... also take a damp cloth and wipe them on their bottoms to make them urinate and poo. Good luck and I hope this helps... I fed 2 babies and they are grown and healthy=)

They are 6 days old.

I finally got 3 of them accepting the bottle. I'm working on the 4th. Mom still does all the mom duties she just doesn't have any milk. The babies still suck on her. The vet said to allow them to do this and it just might start the milk again. They all seem to be doing really well, all are gaining weigh

When you would feed your babies how much did you give them? The formula says 2 tablespoons per day. It doesn't seem like a lot. Thanks for all your advice.

I never used the bottles they sell for pets, I buy the human bottles with premie nipples. they work the best. Can yu get some of those?

I fed mine every hour at first, 24/7, then went to every 2...I also let her eat till she stopped. Just as if she was nursing with mom. Normally she would fall to sleep.

I've heard about the preemie baby bottles and told it works great. I do use a syringe with a preeme animal nipple attached to it. The first few times was a challange, so I made the hole a bit larger and gently pushed the milk in their mouths. They finally got it on their 3rd feeding and started suckling, then I just couldn't reload the syringe fast enough. by the time they started lapping on their own at 3 weeks they were up to 64 cc about every 4 or 5 hours...

Thanks for all the great advice. I had an ok day with the bottle feeding but it doesn't seem like there eating very much. I am afraid of choking them with them formula. What is a good position to hold them? I hold them on there bellies angles upward but they wiggle alot. Anyone have a great technique?

I wrapped a washcloth around them when I fed mine to keep them from wiggling... they seemed to love it... like a baby likes to be swaddled. When my mamas milk about dried up the puppies nursed and it did come back some but I still fed them... I think it was 1 cc at first every three hours... but when they got fussy I would just feed them again.

also I would most try to feed the one baby that isnt nursing from the bottle with a syringe... just so it doesnt get weak

When using a syringe doesn't the puppy have to be sucking in order for him to be able to swallow so it doesn't get in the lungs?

well I used a syringe from day one and I would just put the tip of in it their mouths and push alittle at a time and usually they would start licking and swallowing it. I never had a problem with my pups... heres one with a kitten but see how fast she goes...this kitten is only hours old... they get the hang of it quickly...
