Newborn umbilical cords
 
Hi! My daughter's Madison deliverved two healthy boys this afternoon and all in 2 1/2 hours! It was her first litter. The first pup weighed 6.3 oz and the next 6.8. Both pups were breech! Wow, this from parents both weighing 5 lbs. Now for my question: how do we keep Madison from licking the umbilical cords? We are terrified she will think these are plancenta and rip them out!! Thanks for helping.

It is natural and normal for the mom to lick or bite down the cords. Many will warn you not to let them do and to cut and tie. I did this on my first litter only to have Zoe take off the tied floss and to bite them down to her liking.

We have to remember, animals have a natural instinct. Let her do what she is naturally supposed to do.

It is a normal maternal behavior.

Yes!! Huge! When my daughter had xrays taken she told the Vet she was concerned about their size but was told they were fine. Since both Mom and Dad only weigh 5 lbs, we were astonished and concerned since both were breech. Thank God Madison delivered ok. We assisted her during contractions by applying KY liquid to the sac and wrapping it in a towel. As she contracted, my daughter gently pulled as I held open the vulva on both sides. It took about an hour for the first pup but only 10 minutes for the second.

Mom is going to chew the cord off as short as she can get it but don't worry, she will not harm the puppies. Wow, they are huge puppies. I have 4 females & their pups are always between 2ozs. & 4ozs. Best wishes
