Worming question... Do you worm puppies and mom? I have never, ever brought home a puppy that didn't have worms. I have read conflicting ages on worming the puppies, but most things say to do it at 2 weeks for the babies and the mom. |
We don't use dewormer unless they have a positive fecal test. Our moms are checked before breeding, and the puppies are checked at their well puppy check before they are offered for sell. We always stay on top of flea meds, and don't normally have a problem, the only times we have had a positive test is in the summer months when the fleas are really bad. |
None of my pups have tested positive for worms in years. Mine stay indoors so I think that is the main reason mine are worm free. I recommend taking a stool sample in to the vets and don't just automatically worm them. Another serious problem that many pups get is coccidia. Regular worm medicine will not kill coccidia, it takes a sulfa drug. Often the first sign of coccidia will show up during the weaning process when the pups are 4 to 8 weeks old. With coccidia the pups will get icky poops. If you start seeing mucous poops then definitely take a stool sample to the vet immediately. Many breeders keep albon on hand and treat their pups themselves. |
Best thing to do is just take a fecal sample in of one puppy. If one has it they all do. But, here's another thing to think about, you live in Texas, which probably means your girl is on heartworm.....don't know when you gave her last one, or you took her off of them when you bred her. If you took her off, take a fecal sample in and have them do a flotation test on her. If all is well start her on the Heartworm, if puppies are 2 weeks old, start her back on heartworm now, puppies will automatically be dewormed through mothers milk.....a gentler milder way of deworming. |
