Having a hard time selling? I'm currently not breeding but just wondering to those of you that have puppies for sale right now with the economy being what it is are you having a hard time getting decent prices for your puppies? I live near the Saturn plant in Tn and it's really bad here -- along with all the little factory plants laying off because of Saturn it's coming down to tough decisions buy a dog -- or make the mortage payment??? people here are wanting to sell and move but the market is flooded with homes and everything else that they can sell it's weird, just wondering how others are handling this situation with puppies for sale??? |
I havent had a litter in two years and dont breed/sell much, but the paper is FULL of Yorkies and other breed adds every Sunday. I have noticed that the prices have come down. People are now advertising Yorkies for 400 to 800 instead of 1200 and up two years ago. |
I haven't had a litter in two years either and am not planning on any litters for probably two more years but I'm sure the economy is keeping some from buying pups these days. Glad I don't breed much anyway so I don't have to worry about it :) Donna |
If I were a breeder, I would be ceasing my operation at this time. Each day I see more and more yorkies (and other nice full breed dogs) listed on Craigslist (and other sites) for practically nothing. There are also way too many being turned into shelters now, because people losing jobs can't afford to take care of their dogs. Between the shelters, the market being flooded with yorkies and the economy, it's just not a good time to for puppy sales. I even saw one on Craigslist up for barter on air conditioning work:( |
Yes, I am having trouble selling pups. I keep them for at least 12 weeks and here in the ATL area, the ads I see sell them starting at 6 weeks. When people call and I say mine are 12-15weeks they want to know what's wrong with mine. They think they are too old and worth less when there is more into them. The Continental Kennel Club have taken yorkies on limited registration and registered them CKC and bred them anyway so the adds are now overwhelmingly CKC reg. Then the AJC went from charging for ads to having FREE ads. Well, that may seem good but it's loaded with out of the country people selling "Tiny AKC female $125" Yeah, it's gotten to be a real challenge to educate people about the value added especially when you can see the environment your puppy grew up in. They go and send money to someone out of the country and maybe not even get a puppy! Then they call back after they've been burned and are almost angry with me because the better deal would have been to get their pup locally. I have a 5 month old male from Dec. and 5 month old female (3lbs full grown) from Jan. I priced them lower because of the economy but still a very hard sell. |

I think the breeders in my area are having a hard time selling right now because I see alot of yorkies advertised for alot less than I paid for mine 4 yrs ago. This economy is just affecting everyone |
i didn't breed at all last year. I let all my girls skip. The economy is terrible. i get calls every day but people are only wanting to pay 300 or so for a puppy. I provide a much nicer pup than people around here that do sell them that cheap. I can't afford to spend what i do per litter and sell the pups for 300. I can't afford to get stuck with a bunch either so last year, I just didn't breed. i have two litters coming up in a few days but I alreay plan to keep one whole litter so I guess I'll see how the other litter sales. |
I just had a litter of 5, AKC reg. I sold 4 of them and I think I could have sold several more females. Every call I got was for a female! I sold them for $900 each. The breeder I got my girl from and who has encouraged me to breed, said she still is getting $1500-$1800 for her puppies. She still has a waiting list. I am sure I could have sold the last male too but I pulled my ad here on YT because all of the talk about it being unethical to advertise and just decided to keep him. With some marketing I am sure I would have no problem selling more. But I was pretty shy about asking around. I really wanted to know the people before letting them have a puppy. You can tell I am not experienced. I would really rather have kept them all! But to answer your question, I was amazed that the economy downturn did not seem to hinder the sale of my pups. I probably could have kept the price higher but I thought $900 would be easier on people, especially because the Florida panhandle is not an affluent area. There were some advertised in the paper for less when mine were for sale. I was surprised, no one even tried to talk me down on price or say it was a lot for a dog. But then I paid $1500 and $1200 for the parents! It might be different if I bred all the time. This was only my second litter -- first one went to all family and a friend. |
Things are getting better in Toronto/Canada. Mika just had a litter and I sold the last puppy at the age of 15 weeks yesterday. The price of the puppies on kijiji. Toronto is almost back to normal too. Having a decent website is become a most for breeders. It really help me a lot anyway. |
I am not a breeder but I rescued a few yorkies and one was pregnant her companian went to a friend.. But she has had her puppies 4 healthy ones.. pure bred per vet but lady who gave them up said they were akc but never gave up papers or vet records. Lilly(mom) is a very petite and so is the dad. i was told by a breeder to ask $4-500 but they are almost 5 weeks and refused to show them till after they get their shots. People want them for FREE. I didnt get them to make money but sure wld like to get the vet bills back! HOW |
Am I the only one? I guess I really cannot complain.... I know the economy is bad.... but most of my yorkies I sell locally, go to great homes, and I have no issues. However, I live near a huge military base (Ft. Bragg)... so we may be one of the few parts of the country not going completely under. I have only had 1 or 2 litters a year, maybe 3 but that is pushing it.... I wish everyone the best.... Times are tough but keep your heads up! Stephanie Duke and the Duke Family Yorkies! |
