Determining first day of heat. Well this time I messed up on my dogs first heat day. I have been looking for my other dog that got out and I just forgot about her comming into heat I guess you could say I was side tracked. Well I looked monday and no sign. The I looked on Friday and she was very swollen. So is there any other way that I can get a better idea about how far she is? Does anyone have any other ways as to know or go by? Thanks for any help |
If I intend to breed a female I always count from the 1st day I see blood, not from when I see swelling. Since some females keep themselves very clean or bleed lightly it might be easy to miss by a day or two. For those reasons I like to introduce the male and female around the 9th day of the heat cycle. I also go by what other signs the female is showing, like tail flagging or if the bleeding has stopped or turned light pink. |
Well there are no boys here but I did notice she had her tail up yesterday and she normally dont have it up. She is still bleeding red and yes she keeps herself very clean. The breeder is comming tomorrow to check her out and see what she is doing with her boy. When she starts having pinkish blood haw long after that do you breed her? What about the flagging how long after that? Thanks for the information. |
Usually when a female is ready the bleeding will be nearly stopped or a very light pink. If they are bleeding red then most likely they are not ready. There are always exceptions. Often a female will act ready when she is not. By this I mean she might flag and tease the male but when he tries to mount her she will sit or jump away. Ideally, the most accurate way to tell when a female is ready is to take her to the vets and have progesterone testing (a blood test) done on her. Many of the show breeders do this because they don't want to risk just guessing when a female might be ready. It also can give you a more accurate date of when the pups might be born. When you breed a female over a 3 to 5 day period you are basically just trying to 'catch' her at the right time. Some females conceive early and some can conceive very late in their heat cycle. |
Thank you, your information was very helpful. She stopped bleeding today and sence I am not 100% the breeder came and the stud mounted no problem from my girl. So I told the breeder to let them. I might be on the 10th day but not sure. We are going to breed tomorrow and then on Saturday and Sunday. I also might go tomorrow and get her tested to see how far she is for sure. |
