Genetic Disorders
 
Question: Will most genetic disorders show up within the first year of a puppy's life?? I saw that you give one year against Gentic Disorders when you sell your puppies, so I was wondering if most disorders show up before then?

This past litter of mine was my first, and I so want to do the right thing for my puppies and their new owners. Is there anyway of finding out if a puppy has a disorder, other then making sure both the parents don't have any?

I think the more reputable breeders give a two-year guarantee. Generally liver shunt and Legg-Perthes disease will show up before one year of age. You can get an exam for OFA at one year of age for luxating patella.

Karen, from what I have been hearing, unless you know your dog's background for 10 generations, you can get a throwback. I am worried about this from the financial point of view. I know that may sound like I'm in it only for the money but I don't want to spend the money and then be short if I need to refund some of the money because of a throwback or two. I also don't want to have to sit on the money long term when I can be reinvesting in my dogs. Upgrading my stock and their surroundings. Stock is a bad choice of wording but I couldn't think of any other way to say it. These guys are my babies but I do want to show eventually and that means getting a better and better quality dog.

I have a thread about pedigees and trying to find out who the owners are of one of my females. I don't have any information on her history and I could get a lot of problems from her. Sylvia

I totally understand, it was your inital thread that made me post this thread. I know my dog and her parents, and I know the stud and his parents, I did npt realize that genetic deffects could go but that far. But if I actually thought about it, I probably should have. Now I really feel stupid!! :confused:
I am also putting the money that I made from the sale of my puppies into a new dog. I would also like to show one of mine, but not until I have the close to perfect dog, (not that I don't think Bell or Lilly are perfect, just maybe not in a judges eye!!
