Heating source question... I would love to hear what you guys use for a heat source for the babies. Every single heating pad on the market (for humans) has an auto shut off function, and it's almost impossible to keep the temp. constant. I figured out last night that heating pads for reptiles must stay constant, so I was going to look into that, but wanted to see what some of you thought on here. Thanks! |

I use a whelping pad that is made specifically for puppies. It keeps the temperature a steady 100 degrees and I only have half the whelping box covered with the pad. This time of year in Texas you probably really don't need one. You could use a flannel sheet and the babies would be just fine. It is important to not let the momma get too hot because if the momma is to hot it will effect her milk production. |
Go to garage sales and thrift store or resale shops. I found mine at a garage sale. it has a dial for the heat settings and it stays on. |
Walgreens usually has a heating pad that stays at a constant temp. I only put the heating pad in half the whelping box so mama can move away from the heat source. |

Thank you! |
I use lamps too. I can place it so Mom and babies can go to either end for heat or not. I had a friend that had a baby dig down to the heating pad and crawled in between the cover and the pad and "cooked". And I've always worried about Mom chewing the cord if the pad went awry, since they like to dig around for comfort. |
