I didn't think they were feeding enough so I started them on puppy formula then goats milk but they don't want it. She's only feeding them 3 times a day |

Maybe it's time for puppy food. Are they gaining? |
Are you leaving them dry food down? My 8 1/2 week old pups love the dry food and they are also eating a little dry mix with a little canned. You might also want to grind the dry food a little. I would not think at 8 weeks they would need any type of milk except what little they get from momma. |

That's why I'm worried they haven't gained |

let me try a little cheese and see if that works |
How big of an area are you keeping the 8 week old puppies in? How are their stools? Have you had their stools check by the vet for worms or coccidia? Are the puppies active and playful? |
I'm keeping mom out as much as possibly can. I mix puppy food with hot water, let it soak and then add goat's milk. They are really loving that! I also want to say that they seem to like it warm. When they realize that mom is not there to feed them, they will have to eat if they are hungry. (my babies are 6 weeks now) |
Well, I thought I'd post an update and a couple of questions to this original thread. My puppies will be 10 weeks old on Monday. They are still nursing a few times a day. They are eating about 3 times a day and don't seem to be interested in more than that. 1. Shouldn't they be eating 4 times a day? And maybe they are not cause they are still nursing when they have an opportunity? Should I just relax and not worry about it? 2. Should I still put Zoe in with them at night? She also lets them nurse here or there during the day - not all the time - but once or twice a day. Let this continue until they go to their new homes? Or stop putting her in with them? |
From my experience, each momma is different. I have had some mommas that insisted on sleeping with their pups until they were 10 or 12 weeks old and other mommas would start choosing to sleep in the living room when the pups were a bit younger. I always let the momma decide. I always have my puppy room setup where the momma can get away from the pups if she wants to. I would think by now you could leave the momma away from them at night but be sure to leave down some food for the pups. I always leave down the ground up dry food so they can eat when they are hungry. |
