Alternative to Iodine? Anyone have any thoughts on using this on puppies newly docked tails and dew claws? It contains Benzolkonium Chloride as an antiseptic and Lidocaine HCL for anesthetic. I am just wanting to double check the chemicals going on such small babies. We had a hard time getting one to stop bleeding and vet didn't give anything to keep from getting infection. Kim :) |
The only thing I use is quikstop for the blood. I use the clamp and twist on my tails so there isn't any blood. The dew claws do bleed some but not much. Mama licks them. There are probably some people that do use what you are you talking about but I don't know of anyone that does. The pain only lasts for a few seconds and mama comforts them. Mine usually stop crying as soon as I put them back with mama. i think they are more scared than in pain. and if it was done at the vet, there should be nno chance of infection. |
Thanks, They actually cried for about 20 minutes after. I felt so bad! The vet used scissors and cut them off then sutured them. They each had one stitch but one had 2 and it took us almost an hour to get the bleeding stopped. My vet is not the best I must say but all I have available here. I was angry that he would send them right out bleeding like that without making sure it had stopped. I went back out again and did find the Iodine 10%. Does anyone know if I need to water it down? :) |
Order some Clotisol (and tell that dumba$$ vet to get some too) for the next time. You can get it from Revival. You just coat a thin layer of it over and it seals even the dew claws. It will seal even if there is a little blood. I use the hemostat clamp. Good luck and hope the puppies are ok, I am sure they will be. |
If I order the Clotisol it will take a few days to get here, will they need it by then or will it be too late to do any good. Kim :) |

It will be too late by time you get it.. but it never hurts to have it on hand. I use the cauterizing sticks from the Vet for the dew claws and Clotisol for the tail if any blood, but there usually isn't any after clamping.... NEVER 1 hour!! |
Right, I never expected that much blood because I have read and read and everyone says there is hardly any. :thumbdown Hopefully we can be out of here next year and can live where there are real vets...these people are more frightening by the day! |
i used idoine on my first litter the second day after the vet did they looked swollen and moiste..and it cleared up almost immediately |
My vet uses the stuff to seal the ends too -- almost like super glue. It kept everything nice and neat, no bleeding or chance of germs getting in. |
Ours uses the glue like stuff too. On the yorkies its fine, but on the Biewers it leaves the hair stained...although I like that better than them bleeding! :) |
The clotisol works great on toenails too, if you accidentally cut one to short. When I dock tails mine don't even loose a drop of blood. I can't believe the vet let them bleed like that. It bet it is painful for them to get a stitch in their tail too. Poor babies.:( |
Clotisol is perfect for the dew claws too Deb. Dee get you some Clotisol. I used to use the quikstop and ordered the Clotisol and it is amazing! Hey Kim, I just wondered how old the puppies were when your vet did the tails/dewclaws? |

They were born late Sunday night into Monday morning and I took them on Thurday afternoon. really makes me mad now that I didn't take a pic of all the blood that was on the bedding in thier box, it was rediculas! Live and learn and I will NOT let anything that happen again! Kim |
Kim, don't beat yourself up for this, they are ok now aren't they? Just kiss them babies and enjoy them growing up!:D |
