At what age do you breed your Yorkies. Was wondering about the ages of Yorkies and testing. Carol and Jemma |
I heard you should wait until their 2nd heat... They go into heat about every 7-8 months or thereabout and I heard you should wait until the second time around....are you breeding? There is a breeder in MA who is very reputable that I want to get another one from but hubby won't let me.... |

If your male is AKC registered and if bred prior to 7 months of age, pups cannot be registered. Bile Acids should be performed as soon as possible, usually at 10 weeks of age. Bile Acids results will tell you whether your dog has Liver Shunt, but will not tell you if your dog is a carrier. Testing on eyes, ears, heart, etc. can be done at anytime. X-rays on legs, hips, knees at approximately 6 months of age. But, 2 years of age is preferable as well as being OFA'd. |
we never breed before 24 months . |
No I have no intention of breeding, lol. I was a breeder og Golden Retrievers for years and years. I was wondering really why breeders would breed before they get a final OFA which isn't until they are 24 months. Preliminary's don't count. Growth plates are open until then. I had 2 Goldens where preliminary's at a year showed good. By 24 months one was fair and the other borderline. So I know for a fact the bones do change. I myself would not purchase a pure bred unless both parents were two yrs old and all clearences final. It's too scary. Why would someone breed before 2 years? I guess I just don;t know the Yorkie breed. Are breeds different with the OFA. Are Yorkies able to clear under 24 months? Thanks for your replies. Carol and Jemma |

YTCA Code Ethics and Conduct state not prior to 2nd Season or 18 months of age. However, on an average most yorkie females don't come into their first Season until approximately 10 months or older. Therefore 2nd Season is closer to the age of 2. OFAing is the same in yorkies, at the age of 2. |
OK thanks. So if you breed before the age of 2, you really don't have all the clearances yet right? Wrong? lol I wonder how many breeders are honest enough to tell buyers that the parents have PREliminary clearances only? |
