Free pups... anyone else get these emails? I have been getting the most emails lately people wanting me to give them a pup because they can't afford to pay. I tried to tell the last person that if they couldn't afford to buy a pup then they may want to wait until they could because the cost of raising a dog is expensive. I also told them to check with their local shelter or rescue. Well they let me have it telling me what a bad breeder I was and I was only doing it because of the money. What money? All I have seen has went out the door not in. How do you all handle these people without coming off rude? Maybe I should just say no I don't have any and wish them luck. Then leave it at that but it ticks me off. |
I would tell them that you highly value your puppies and want to see them go to those who also highly value them. If someone thinks they are worth nothing, they are not fitting owners for your puppies. They are high maintenance pets and those not willing to pay the price to purchase them, will probably not be willing to pay the price to keep them healthy either. I do understand some that do not feel comfortable paying the top dollar some of the Yorkies are worth and sell for. That is their choice. But to ask for one free? That is a person that fails to see their value, their worth, their charm, their absolute lovingness! (is that a word!?!?) I think it is part of the world we live in. Too many people being given too much for nothing. I changed my mind -- I would probably tell them nothing. I just would not answer such a ludicrous email. |
i just finished placing a litter and i had a ton of that one woman offered me 100.00 and i explained that, that was a severe insult..that if she wanted a expensive breed then she need to be prepared and to save. i simply replied no, i didnt even bother explaining to most...i even placed my ad with firm on the price the first time, the second time i put firm and please do not ask me to lower my prices, that i have already reduced them for the current economic status, that i put a lot of time, money and effort in to my pups . once i put that it really slowed down..lol the first couple of time i was like wow, these people are crazy, after that it just got ridiculous. one lady called and offered me 400.00..i told her no i wasnt coming off 400.00 (for a female no less) she whines and says but someone else in your area on the same website is advertising them for 400.00 i said "wow really, you better call them before they are sold, can i have the number too??" (no ad i looked...lol) and finially she gave up. good luck!!:D |

~I've been fortunate about not getting emails. But every once in a while, somebody I work with wants a free yorkie or a really cheap one. I just smile and graciously say no. Because of the economy, alot of people think if they just ask, we might cave, just so the puppies get sold. I personally wouldn't respond to those emails. Missy, I get these but I get a lot more calls than emails. I flat out tell them, sorry, I don't have any cheap pups but the paper is full of them. Then I say thanks and hang up. Sometimes i try not to be rude and sometimes I don't give a rat's a## depending on the mood I am in when some of these dumbos call. |
OMG! I just posted about our local paper advertising FREE yorkies!! Maybe they could look in our paper! |

I get those emails about everything. I have sold a ton of stuff on Craigslist and rehomed a couple of horses as well, and it's always a sob story. Not to sound cold, but I am not going to give a horse to someone who just lost their job and doesn't know if they can make their next house payment. I am very reasonable when it comes to bartering items, as I do understand that the economy isn't in the best shape right now, and MI has the worst of all the states, but there are some people that just expect a handout, and those are the same people that are pulling this economy down. I have even had someone email me claiming that they were a very sick little teenage girl (which I guess could have been, but still) saying that she was so sick and stuck home all the time and needed a horse. If there weren't so many scammers out there I might have looked into it more, but I have seen just about everything. |
The best you can do is let them know there are alot of costs involved to properly raise the puppies. Let them know they are always welcome to check with rescues or shelters in their area. Politeness is the best way to handle things imo, and simply tell them your not able to help them at that cost. If they still want to be rude then I simply feel it wasn't the right home for one of my babies anyway. |
Don't forget many of those e-mails you get are from puppy brokers; they get breeders names and email addresses from various sources, and are looking for free/cheap dogs for resale. I think, perhaps, you need to just send them an application, and have them fill out a paper giving references, including vet references, and work references. Ask questions about how long they have been living in the same address, and if they have a fenced yard. Inquire about any children they have living with them and the ages. Ask about other pets, and if they've ever needed to rehome. There are many sample pet adoption papers you can use, but this will help you weed out serious inquires only, and it's not rude to tell someone you can't afford to sell your dogs for that amount. A breeder shouldn't be expected to lose money. A good breeder will refuse to sell to certain people even if they can meet your price. You must to be very protective of the dogs you have helped produce, you are their only advocate. |
That is so unreal. How will they pay for the dog's care? (assuming they're not brokers etc) Having recently spent $3,000 in 2 mths on my boys for health stuff, I'm just shaking my head. My vet costs this year will probably total $5000. |

Tell them you put alot of time, love and money into your breeding so you have healthy dogs for good homes. If they don't have the money to buy a dog how will they feed it good food, pay vet bills, take care of monthly heartworm and flea meds? Not to mention grooming costs? The bare essentials. |
That being said...can I have a free yorkie? Just kidding! |

I completely agree... they are worth every penny... and you shouldnt feel bad not at all.. yorkies are expensive and its not cheap to have one.. if they cant afford one perhaps they should try looking for a dog that they are able to afford... obviously if they cant afford one what makes them think they will have money for vet bill...vacciness..grooming.. food etc..:aimeeyork lol my babies havent had puppies but ive had so many ppl asking once i do.. if i can give them for free since they are going to good homes lmao.. :psilly them (yorkie is love :aimeeyork) |

Gotcha. I thought that was outrageous if someone was paying that much to spay their dog! Although I do believe a lot of vets nowadays have gotten rather greedy when it comes to actually "fixing" peoples broken animals. I worked at an animal hospital and witnessed the greed and snobbiness first hand. Thankfully I have a wonderful vet that actually cares for animals and not about driving a luxery car. I believe a good vet will work with a family instead of just offering to kill their dog if they can't pay up front. |

:confused:My Lexie is due to have her first litter in a week and I've already had two people ask me if I have any extra puppies that I can't sell that they would take one. I just could not believe someone would actually ask me that! |
