Finding a stud
 

Hi,
Want to breed my Roxy who will be 2 in the summer, when she has her next heat. What is the procedure though when you find a stud? Would i pay the stud's owner a fee and about what would i pay them? :confused: Also, would i bring the stud to my house or leave my Roxy with them? I live in Ohio and have a couple phone numbers of stud's that were advertised in our local newspaper. My Roxy is CKC registered. Should i match her with a CKC stud or AKC or does it not matter? I have so many questions that need answers before its time to breed my girl. Can someone help me, please? Thanks so much.:)

Before finding a stud, she should have a blood panel and bile acids test. Some other things that really should be done also are a check for STDs, thyroid panel, urinalysis, ears and eyes checked, hips and knees checked and preferrably OFA'd, etc.

To find a mentor you can go to dog shows in your area. They can help you get into breeding and maybe you can assist them with some whelpings. This is after you read everything you can about breeding. Then it is possible that they would have a stud that you could use.

Some reputable breeders register with CKC but normally the AKC is used because they are a bit more careful on what dogs they register and it's the major organization to show your dog(s) through in the US. You don't have to show to be a good breeder but if you are breeding for the right reasons (to better the breed), it would be good for a judge to at least look at your dog and see what they think.

The male should have all the testing done that the female has and the female goes to the male's house and stays there for a few days normally. All interaction should be supervised and the female should be held during a tie, so she does pull away and hurt herself or the male.

You'll need tons of money for pre breed testing, prenatal care, puppy care and a possible c-section ($500-$2250 usually). Then someone will need to be home with the pups until they get a bit older. If mom can't feed them or she doesn't make it, you will have to bottle feed every couple hours.

Yes thank you. This info helps a lot. I do plan to read a lot more before breeding Roxy and making sure that I have extra money for the whole process. Not very comfortable leaving my girl with someone that I dont know though, but i guess that's what will have to be done..

The stud owner usually sets a price they charge or some will take pick of the litter.
