Visit new pups
 
How soon can families visit new puppies?
They are 5 days old now and will get shots @ 6 to 8 wks

I don't like to show mine until they are at least 6 weeks old. Prior to that I take lots of pictures to share with them.

No one is around my babies until they have at least one shot.

I did the same thing, I waited until they had their first shots. Not only did I want to make sure that they were vacinated, but I also wanted to make sure that everyone was out of the woods. So much can happen when they are so young.

Same here. I try to keep visitors out until they have had their first set of shots. I try to send pictures when possible.

@ what age do you give first set of shots?

I was told 6 weeks by vet but now I've heard it's 8 Weeks.

I prefer giving shots to my pups at 9 or 10 weeks, depending on their size. I think the recommendation is to never vaccinate before 8 weeks. You also have to consider at what age the pups are totally weaned. Large breed dogs are weaned at a much earlier age than toy breeds so that is why the larger breed pups should be vaccinated sooner. As long as mom has had her vaccinations and the pups are nursing from her, they will be getting protection through her milk.

If vaccinations are given while the puppies still have immunity from their mothers...the vaccine is not effective.

I do not allow visits until the pups have had their first vaccine which I give at 9 weeks old. I am very happy to send as many pics as the buyers want though. I know when I buy a new baby I LOVE getting pics, so I put the shoe on the other foot and send alot for them :)

The problem is no one knows exactly when the mom's immunities wear off on each puppy.

There was quite a discussion about when the immunities wear off on the K-9 cruise--the "experts" were in total disagreement.....which is why we hear everything from 6 weeks to 10 weeks for the first vaccinations.

To answer the original question, no one comes to visit the puppies until after the first vaccinations--and weights and health and how long the dam is nursing all need to be addressed. I do the pictures for anyone seriously interested. I do not begin shots until the vet advises to begin them. And no one leaves until the 12th week...
