Breeder regulation? First off, I'm not a breeder, but I feel like more and more, I'm seeing relatively uneducated (in animal husbandry) folks trying to breed teensy Yorkies. This all kind of brought up an interesting point and I'd love to bounce it off some people in the know: I sometimes feel like it might be a good idea to make people pass some kind of registration to become breeders. I think, for one thing, it would help animal control, and for another thing, you'd only be getting the people who KNOW the business to be the ones who breed. I guess, in my mind, it would be an exam you take that covers basic genetics (as in, dominant v recessive genes, what types of behaviors and characteristics are most likely to be passed on, etc), as well as a ton of ethical questions (ideal number of litters for a type of animal/breed/group- again, I don't know the standards and when they change), birthing questions, emergency situation questions, finding a puppy a good home questions.. I mean, I suppose there could be a lot of areas that had maybe even just 5 or 6 questions to them. The thing is, I think it would be relatively tough for a new breeder to get into the business that way; instead, they'd have to learn a lot about it before jumping in. And perhaps, by having something to take away from unethical breeders, it would really help curtail puppy mills. Anyway, I'm really interested in your opinions on it. Thanks! |
Awesome... That's a great idea!!! I'm not sure who to pitch it to but an excellent idea! |
