what should the size of pup be? My 5 pd yorkie is due a week from Saturday. She's been to the vet and had x-rays done. The vet said there is one puppy and its pretty big. My question is what is the normal size for a Yorkie pup, and what is "big". Thank you, Jeanne |
I am just guessing, but maybe almost a pound. Not really sure. Someone will know and give you a better idea of the weight. Joy, Nikki and chloe Rose |
one puppie and large i would sudgest you set up a Cesarian section a five pound girl with a single large puppie will 89% mean a tummy tuck my puppies were 2oz to nearly 4oz talk to your vet the reason i get ultra sounds done it to know if there is more than 2 puppies so i can relax some how old is your female has she had a litter before ect ... i hope this has been helpful |
I agree I would suggest a c-section with one pup there is usually a problem birthing because of his/her size...average litter weights of my kids are 3.5 - 4 oz good luck to you!!! |
If I do decide to let her try to naturally deliver, how will I know if there is need for ceaseran. We do have an emergency vet 2 miles away. Thank you Jeanne |

If the bitch push for a little while and nothing is coming out , it will be C-Section time . |
the xray should reveal the size of the pup (his head and shoulders) the vet measures the diameter of the pup and your gals pelvis. Many times with one pup the head and or shoulders is too large to pass. |
My Penny, who was around 5 pounds before she gave birth a year or so ago had one pup... it was 5.4 ounces... I thought that was big.... The sire is 3 pounds.... It will depend on the size of the sire also.... The average weight of my pups are between 2 and 4.5 ounces at birth. Good luck. |

I went to the vet on Tuesday, got the x-rays and talked with the vet. being myself and worried silly I decided to go to a specialist. He looked at her and suggested that we try to let her try giving birth on her own. He said only let her go a half hour in labor and after that bring her in. He works at VCA animal hospital only 2 miles from our home and they are open 24 hrs every day of the week. So I think that is what I want to do. I do appresate any feed back on this matter. I've been so upset about this, I think my baby is too young, too imature, and too little. She is due Sept. 25th. I love my dog and feel terrible about letting her get into this situation. thank you, Jeanne |
Penny gave birth naturally..... it seemed painful.... but she was a champ!!! My two other females Lucy and Pebbles (who currently has 5 week old pups), never make a sound giving birth.... I think some females can't tolerate the pain as much as others. |
Gus was 4.3 oz at birth. I don't know how big his sibs were. I know is mom is like 5 lbs and his dad was (passed away last winter) 3.5 lbs. |
If you choose to let your girl whelp out by yourself have your vet on standby. I always call my vet when we start labor, then she knows to be in that mode if I need her. I have a wonderful relationship with my vet though. She understands that that I care very deeply for all my dogs and they are going to receive the best I can provide for them. Is this your first litter to whelp with yorkies ???? Or are you a experienced breeder, I know this can be scary. I treat every pregnancy as a new one as even if your female has whelp already every time it is different. |
I'm not a breeder but when Maddie was born I was very fortunate to be there. The mom also only had one pup and weighed aroung 5 lbs. Maddie was 5 oz and her mom Mia did have some problems delivering. It was a little scary but Mom and baby were both fine. The breeder was in contact with the vet and ready to bring Mia in. If you aren't sure - I guess I'd be prepared. Mia's owner certainly was and it help to avoid any problems. |
Hey, Sue. I am an experienced breeder, but not of Yorkies. I wasn't too worried until I realized that Yorkies don't have a set size. Like the Chihuahuas. Those throwbacks worry me excessively. In 2 months I should have my 2nd and 3rd litters of Yorkies. I hope everything goes as smoothly as the first litter and then some. Sylvia |
