My baby Almost died from mating!

My yorkie went to mate for the 1st time yesterday. I stayed for around 45 mins and left him. I was going to pick him up later in the evening. The woman called and said something was wrong. She brought him to me and he had a thick gel-like substance coming out of his mouth, his eyes were like glass, and he was limp an lifeless. I immediately rushed him to the vet. I was hysterical and was sure he was dead. They gave him fluids and shots and he spent the night. This morning they called with news that he was much better and could come home. He has slept most of the day and ate some, drank some, and played a little. He is still exhausted. They believe that his sugars just got extremely low and he bottomed out. How could this have happened so quickly? He eats on a regular basis. I felt like the Worst mom in the world and was never going to forgive myself. Needless to say I am going to get him and fixwed and he will never mate again. I'd pay a million dollars for another yorkie before I put his life in jeopardy. I was just wondering what and why this could have happend so quickly???

How old is he? Had he had bloodwork and a bile acids test before breeding to determine he was healthy?

I have no ideal how big is he? I ask because I know some males will stop eating while mating and lose a little weight. if your little one was small in the first place this might be why. not eating and making his sugar drop. I would give him a little nutri cal and pedylite to drink. that should help him perk back up.

I never take my male to a female. They always come to me. If they didn't help in the breeding the female could have drung him around and if he is small it could have hurt him.

I sure hope he feels better soon.

Oh my lord, so many bad things happening. I agree though with the above poster, you always take the female to the male, not vice versa. I'm just glad your little guy is okay
How old is he?

believe420 05-19-2009 12:37 PM

He did and had a clean bill of health. They were supervised the whole time and while the female is the aggressor at first, he was definitely not drug around or hurt. He was having a blast and I would have Never left him in the hands of someone I did not trust. He is almost 4lbs and has been eating regularly. He is 15 months old and from the breeders I talked to, this is fine but maybe I should have waited. It does not matter because he will never do it again. I love him wayyy too much.

Wow, what a scary ordeal for you AND him! I am so glad he is okay.

Not forgetting the seriousness of what happened and could have happened, but I'm just curious whether or not they have a successful tie before this happened?

bjh 05-19-2009 01:56 PM

It generally takes a lot of energy for a male to breed a female, especially if he is inexperienced. When I breed mine if the male has not tied within 15 or 20 minutes I just put him up and let him try later. Your male just over overexerted himself and crashed. Did he ever successfully tie the female?

believe420 05-20-2009 05:42 AM

Idk

Honestly since I was not there, I do not know if there wa successful tie or not. I was so busy babying him yesterday that I did not get to talk to the lady he was with. I really do not even feel like talking about the siutation because it makes me sick. I feel like sucha bad mommy but he is much better, barking at squirrels this morning and talking to the neighbor dog through the fence. thank God!:D

LunasMomma 05-20-2009 07:45 AM

I'm so glad he's okay now:love:

Honestly, and this is just my opinion---An experienced toy dog breeder should have known to watch for signs of your male overexerting himself and stepped in and seperated them for a while, giving him a chance to rest and maybe eat something and calm down:( I know you said that you trust this person, but I'd rethink that one. I'm not trying to put her down or anything, but she put your baby at risk with her lack of knowledge of the breeding process and that's inexcusable for someone that's supposed to be an experienced breeder. Thank God he's okay now, but it could have been the end of his life:cry:

Hugs to you and little Mr. Hot Rod:girl_hug:

Never let someone take your stud. My little 3lb male get low sugar and I give him sugar water before. I hold the female always.

She did seperate them for about a 1/2 hour and he did not show signs of being over-exerted is what the strange thing was. He was up an playing an having fun one minute and laying down an limp the next. He had been fed and drank a bunch of water while I was there. I would never put my baby where I thought anything could happen. Believe me, he will never go anywhere again! I am never going to let him try an mate again so this is something I ever have to be concerned about. It is not worth it.

mypreciouspups 05-21-2009 12:51 PM

I will be sending this to a person I know.. she would never believe me if I actually told her this.. so coming from some one this happened to is even better...
I am so relieved to see he is alright now after crashing..
