Breeding a female I would like to ask a question. If a female is bleeding, does that always mean it's in heat? I have a friend that has a female that I've had for 4 days, she is bleeding (so I would assume she's in heat) but my male not going around her. I've put then together, but they just lay around as usually. She said that when she brought her to me so had been bleeding for 3 or 4 days. This is her 2nd time to come in heat. Any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Beth |
Let me see if I have this right. Your friend brought her female yorkie to you to breed with your male? Have you had both dogs tested first to make sure they're fit to breed? Brucellosis for male and female, full blood panel, eyes and hips checked. There is a lot that needs to go in to breeding, than to just like the looks of the dogs and want to breed them. How old are the dogs? There are 3 stages of heat, the first week they bleed and don't get pg. then 2nd week when the bleeding stops is when they get pregnant and the 3rd week, which the female is done ovulating, but the male is still interested in sex, but, female isn't |
Most females are not receptive to being bred by a males until the 9th day of their heat cycle at the earliest. Usually the best time to breed is around the 11th day of their heat cycle, by then the bleeding has stopped. If your male is experienced then he will know when the time is right. Some males are just never interested in breeding females and as much as we might want them to breed, there is nothing that can be done about a male that has no interest in breeding except for using artificial insemination. It is not advisable to keep the male and female together all the time. It is best to keep them separated and just allow them together for short periods while trying to breed them under supervision. Like the above poster mentioned, there is much more involved in breeding than just putting two dogs together. If you are not even familiar with the heat cycle of a dog then you have much to learn about breeding and whelping. Is your friend going to be the one to whelp the pups and raise them? Does she know all that is involved? Breeding dogs can be very rewarding but it can also come with a lot of heartache if done blindly and without proper education. |

I would ask your friend to do research on breeding before attempting to breed her . |
