Yorkie Breeding Questions 1 Attachment(s) Just wanted to say hello to everyone. We have a 18 monthe old female yorkie http://kona.kontera.com/javascript/l...rey_loader.gif named Abigail who we are just in love with. We are currently waiting for her to go into heat so we can have her breeded. Can anyone tell me, how many times a year a yorkie would normally go into heat. Not sure if its just once or more. Also are there any other signs except for the normal bleeding and swelling |
first welcome to yt..........second....she is gorgeous..........to answer one of your quesitons........yorkies go into heat every 4-12 months.......with the average of them going into heat every 6-8 months..........and those are pretty much the signs.......you may also notice that if there is a male around he may start "paying more attention to her".....and frequently sniffing her........good luck |
Usually they go in to heat, not before 6 mos, depending on their size(how much does your yorkie weigh). It seems the smaller they are, the longer it takes for the first heat cycle. The first week of heat, they bleed, you will probably see her licking herself all the time, you can check to see if she's swollen(if you don't notice any blood). Please, really read up on pregnancy, whelping, etc before breeding. I'm going to start breeding, but, not for over a year yet, and I have a lot of reading, etc to do. There is so much that can go wrong with these little ones when breeding, like losing the female, or losing puppies, or both. Sometimes the bitch has to have a c-section(which can be very costly). There have been breeders who have lost the bitch while whelping and even afterwards, and the breeder has had to bottle feed every baby for the first 3 weeks or so, every 1 1/2 to 2 hours. These are all things you need to be prepared for. You will also need to get your female in to your vet and have her checked out good and tested to make sure she is okay to breed and doesn't have any hereditary things she could pass on to her babies. Oh by the way, LOL, she is gorgeous. And now a question, I can't tell by the picture, but does she have a collar/leash on or harness? If collar, please change to harness, they are much more safer and having a collar on them can mess up their tracheas. You may have a harness and it's just hard to tell with all the hair.:) |
Just curious, why do you want to breed her? Where did you get her? How much does she weigh? Did your breeder give you breeding rights? Do you know the dogs in her pedigree as well as the sire's, forward and backward? Has she been genetically tested? Do you know the many, many inherited health problems the yorkie breed is prone to? Where will you be getting the sire from? Are you willing to pay $$$$$ if she was to need a c-section to have the puppies? Are you selling her puppies? Sorry for so many questions, I swear, if I had a penny for everytime somebody came on this forum and said they are breeding their yorkie, I would be a millionair! LOL I was Just curious....:) |

It sounds to me that you have some homework to do before breeding her. Visit this website Dog Breeding and Canine Reproduction by Debbie Jensen. Dog Breeding and Whelping guide for dog breeders. for a multitude of great information on breeding, from heat cycles, mating, whelping, and weaning pups, as well as many things that may happen in between. I suggest you learn all of this and more before breeding Abigail for the safety of her and her litter. Good luck to you whatever you decide. |
