Who reads the DNA? If I get my Tippy's DNA done to see if he has any genetic flaws, who reads it? He is 4 years old and is in perfect health, good teeth and looks great. He weighs 5.3 so is a nice size and wonderful temperment. His female died and so we bought him from a nice family from Texas. Great papers also. |
Anita the DNA does not read for genetic defects although its a requirement of the AKC to have it on file in case there is a dispute or question regarding parenting. DNA is only needed for a stud used more than 3 times a year or 10 times over his life time. AKC sends you the kit ($35.00 I believe)a brush of sorts, your stud he chews on it from the inside of his cheek then send it off to AKC only for "record purpose" The tests you need for genetic defects are blood panel, Bile acid test and knees and hips, these are all done by your vet, there is no DNA test for a canine as yet that will show defects. Hope this helps |
DNA answer Thank-you so much for the answer. I guess it was to obvious for me to figure it out. LOL The vet said he is in great health. |
This only confirms the parentage on the father's side. Which I wish that all breeder should have to have all their dogs DNA'd. This would have to make everyone HONEST... There are so many ways of getting around papering litters with ONLY the fathers proof of parentage. Then if you want to go a little deeper in this, AKC has the DNA tests coded so they are the only ones that can read it... I think this is a little unfair as we are the ones that are paying for this service.... :( Since all my dogs are being tested with the bile acid test to make sure their liver functions are at the proper levels. My vet and I have discussed getting the blood for DNA to send to a private lab which will run me about $60.00 per dog. But then there will be no questions on parentage in puppies that come from me, and I think it is worth having on record if we are drawing blood anyways. I am not saying anyone is not breeding correctly here on YT, so please do not take my comments personally. But as many know that their are some other people that don't belong to this community that are claiming to have the Biewers AKC registered and this is how they are doing it. By messing with the litter registration. I personally don't know how this all works. It has been explained to me several times, but it falls on deaf ears as I don't want to know how to be dishonest. |

I guess I really wanted my opinion heard...:lol tears Sorry about that everyone. I must have hit the button prematurely.... As I was adding my last sentence. |
Hey Sue, I was listening the first time, honest...lol. I was unaware that any Biewers were registered AKC. New one on me today. I can't even imagine how they could accomplish that. I have only done DNA on my boys, since I know where my girls have been...and they're unfortunately unable to use these tests for genetic defects as yet. Hopefully that will come in the future so we have more to rely on than the gamut of other screenings we use now. Before breeding Tippy, I would try to find out as much of the health history as many generations back in the parentage as possible. You cannot simply rely on HIS current health. The possibility of him carrying recessive problems is always a factor. |
I agree about the importance of having DNA test done. The breeder that I bought one of my dogs from sold my dog's dad to another breeder. This breeder was using him alot so decided to have him DNA'd. His DNA didn't match up to the DNA of his father who had died. Over 300 letters were sent out by AKC revoking the AKC . Alot of upset people were involved even some law suits. Luckily I had a honest breeder who called warning me of the letter that was coming from AKC. She also made everything right. |

I to know where my females have been... I just want everything on file as a just incase measure... as you sell puppies to the public a dispute may someday come up on parentage and this will enable me to have this information. With the cost of 60.00 I feel it is reasonable. And as we have read many posts there are new issues and with dealing with the public I have learned... you just never know. :p Oh, my I hope I only submit this reply once. Here it goes.....lol |

Stacy, Both Pat and I were told by a woman that her Biewers were AKC reg. I expressed some astonishment and asked for more info. Needless to say, she did not respond to any further e-mails. Since my AKC boy sired my current litter with a Biewer female, I cannot register them. They will not be placed as breeding stock because I am not comfortable with the possibilities of the breeder getting a mis-marked puppy. Remi's mom and dad are both standard colors with the recessive piebald gene. These babies are so picture perfect that I just wanna keep every one of them. Then , I wake up and say "Wha? Yew outta yer mind?" That is when I have to break up a "I'm top dog; no, I am top dog!" fight between the two boys. Lordy, are they fun to watch. |
