Earliest time to get an xray? What is the earliest recommended day of pregnancy that I can get an xray to see how many pups Kallie is having? Last time she was on day 47 and we clearly saw 3 puppies although he wasn't sure if she was having a 4th.. She ended up having 3 puppies....She is now on day 49....What do you guys think I should do? I am getting overly excited so I want to know asap.....LOL.... |
From what I've always heard and done, around day 50-53 is best. Of course, as you know, it's not a guarantee that you'll get the exact number to expect, but you might get lucky. :) |
I think it was day 58 on cuz then all the pup's bones has been calcified & it's easier to detect. Mimi had her x-rays done 2 wks before & the doc missed one...we thought it was over after feeling her tummy & she had one more! Total of 5 healthy pups...I know, I couldn't wait either:D |
Sunnie would only have 2 pups for each litter so I would wait until 57-59 days for the xray. That way we (me and dr p) could compare head size and how they were laying. Worked well for us. |
I always get excited and go on day 50 but I will try not to do that anymore because I have had to do them over later. |
I would wait until 55 days. We had to do ours over too. I seen the 5th puppy, but he wasn't clear to everyone until the second x-ray. |
The longer you wait the easier it is for the vet to evaluate their sizes, which is also a very important thing that can come from an x-ray. It isn't as exciting as knowing how many but it is important. I would go around 55 days or after. It's tough to wait, I know. Either way it will be super exciting to see them, even if it is a few days after what you'de like. (either way the waiting for pups will drive you so darn crazy, it goes so slow at the end of pregnancies.) |
We are headed back to the vet on Friday due to having our x-ray too early! I wished I would have waited but we had ultrasound done on day 35 and only showed one verifiable heartbeat. So I thought we should go in and make sure or atleast get a second look. Now I will always wait until the last week of pregnancy. We went way too soon!!!!! Good luck with your whelp and keep us posted!:) |
We also have to go back I took her on 45th day and we couldn't see pups. Her last litter we took x-ray on her 46th day and we were able to see 3 pups and that's what she had. Vet said it's best to go after day 55 |

We do the xray on the 60th day. My vet also recommends that you do the xray before the dam eats, but after her bowel movement of the day. When the intestines is full of fecal matter, it is difficult to see all the puppy skeltons. We feed right after the xray. |
I did it! Ok, so I am the most impatient person in the world... I could not wait and I ended up taking Kallie in yesterday for her xray....Well it was supposed to be day 52 but I could barely see anything in the xray....The girl that took the xray did it all wrong the first time and had to redo it as you could not even see Kallie's bones...Now the 2nd xray, you could see Kallie's spine a little bit but not like it should be but they weren't going to redo it....Kind of made me mad as I thought that the girl messed it up the second time also....Apparently there are different thicknesses to the paper.....Anyways, I can barely see 2 little spines but the doc came in and counted puppy heads and said that she is having 5 maybe 6 puppies....Now I brought the xray home and have stared at it so long and I think I can see what he is talking about as far as the heads, but I am no expert.....I am wondering if Kallie is just not as far as I thought or if the xrays are bad....Either way, I am going to wait until the 20th of May which is her due date and see if she has them, if not, I will go in on the 20th for another xray just to make sure... I am terrified that I am going to think she is done giving birth and then more puppies are going to die inside of her because of me so I would rather keep paying for xrays just to be positive..... |
