No tie during breeding I have a new yorkie stud (12 months old) that weighs 3 1/2 lb. My 5 lb. female just came into heat. My male has now mounted my female and ejaculated twice but both times there was no tie -- he just slipped out(I know he ejaculated b/c he was still slightly dripping on the floor). Is he too small???? Do I need to hold them together afterwards??? Thanks. |
i doubt that he will let you hold him. I don't know why he didn't tie but I can tell you first hand that a no-tie can still lead to puppies. I have a week old 'surprise' right now. my female showed no signs of being pregnant at all. no weight gain, no nothing then went into hard labor last monday week ago and one hour later, I had a beautiful big female baby. only one. |
His behavior is common for an inexperienced male. If he was inside her long enough to ejaculate she could get pregnant. Are you holding the female still while the male mounts her? Years ago I had a inexperienced male that would knot up outside the female and I held him in place and the female did get pregnant. |
No I didn't hold the female. She was actually only on day 6 and day 7 (today) of her heat cycle so I didn't think she would stand for him. Both times it happended was when I was sitting and eating (once supper/other time breakfast) and they did their thing under the table w/o me knowing. It wasn't until I saw my male sheepishly walking away, and I examined him that I realized what happened. So you are suggesting then that I hold them together for several minutes after he is done -- you mentioned that this is commom for inexperienced males -- does that mean that me may start to tie after he matures more??? |

Usually day 10 and 12 are when they are more fertile. |
hmm.. interesting. I didn't know the female was the deciding factor --- I will give your suggestions a try. Thanks. |
I usually don't introduce the male and female until day 9. The female's vulva will soften more when she is ready to breed, making it easier for the male to tie her. It is not recommended to keep the male and female together when she is in heat except when you are trying to breed them.. If he did succeed in tying her when you are not there to hold the female she could go crazy trying to get get loose and it could hurt her or the male. |
I never let my males and breeding females together except during breeding and always assisted for the reason the above poster stated. Allowing unsupervised breeding can be very dangerous to both male and female |

Well, must have been inexperience in this situation. B/c they did tie today. I have been keeping them in separate rooms while I am away at work but when I am home with them, I need to really watch them (they can be sneeky). I live in Canada, so I'm not sure if expectations of the CKC are the same as the AKC. But I am only a small breeder. I have 3 girls and this one boy who I will hopefully be able to use as a stud. So I would know who the "daddy" is. Nonetheless, I do have little diaper pants on my girl which so far has stopped them from tieing when they've been together with me in the evening. |
