milk and whelping
 
my baby is due with her first litter any day now. as of today I now can get Milk out of each nipple is there any way to make a educated guess as to when to expect temp drops and whelping? I read online that they will develope milk and then within 48 hours you will be whelping. im sure each dog is different but if anyone has any personal experiance to give me a better heads up it would be much appreciated. im taking temps about 3-4 times a day and it is all over the place from 100.5-99.3 and anywhere inbetween. anything to help me be as prepared for these little cuties would be great. thanks

When was she breed and how many times and how far apart were her breedings. If it the temp stays down for 12 hours she's getting near. But, forget the thermometer thing....some girls temps don't even change. It'll happen when it happens any where from the 58 to 63rd day of each breeding. You just have to make sure to keep her confined so she's not having those pups all over the place and you just can't leave the house until she has the pups.

I have had some females get milk a full week before having puppies. Like Mardelin said some of them don't have the temperature drop or you could miss it. Just try to relax and keep a very close eye on your expectant momma. She will start getting restless, digging and hiding most likely when the labor starts. As the labor progresses she may vomit some and have several bowel movements and the contractions will begin. I pray your momma has a safe whelping.

It's true! Not all of them read the book on what they should do for giving us signs of welping. LOL I have had girls eat an hour before, no temp drop or be all over the place up to a week before, nesting all day or just a few minutes before the babies come, milk come in a week before whelping or a couple hours after the puppies are here. We will take temps to try to guess, but it is still all a guess. All this and we don't even have many litters at all! LOL
