C-section puppies
 
This is only the 2nd time we have had to do a c-section and the other mama had a baby before she had to go in so there were no problems with her. This mama is acting like the babies are little aliens. Granted this is her first litter, the babies are only 2 hours old and mama is still woozy but is there anything I can do to help? The mama in the next cage wants to take care of them but I am worried about her getting her smell on them and the new mama permanently refusing to take them. Sylvia

Poor little girl...I'm sorry about her c-section...:( You might have to bottle feed these babies for a few days until she is feeling herself. Are they not wanting to nurse? Or is she just not cleaning them? If it's the latter you can potty them yourself and they should be fine as long as they are nursing. If not try to put a little karo syrup on her nipples to get them interested. It's hard with a mommy that has just had major surgery. Is she drinking water and eating at all yet? Just watch her carefully, I have heard of so many not doing well after a c-section. Good luck! :aimeeyork

No, they are not trying to nurse yet but they are laying close to her now. No, she's not cleaning them either. No, she's not eating or drinking yet.

I made her lay down and put them up to her but they don't seem interested in nursing yet. She's not acting as scared of them as she was. They are fine, fat, healthy babies. The smallest one is over 4 ounces.

I took her out earlier and put the other mama in with them but all she wanted to do was clean them and chew their umbilicals so I put her back with her own babies. She wouldn't lay down with them. Sylvia

This is a new one to me, but I would keep the other momma away from them for now, give you girl a day or two to get over her surgery and hopefully she will bond with them. There was a recent post like this one, where mom woke up from a c-section and wanted nothing to do with the babies for a day or two, then mothering instincts kicked in.... Can you hold her while they nurse, when oxytocin releases in the brain from nursing pups, that helps to kick the mothering instincts in too. If you cannot get them to nurse on her (try several times) then you'll have to hand feed them with milk replacer or goat milks etc. until she accepts them, make sure they stay warm too, and let momma have access to them at all times so when she does decide to mother, she can get to them. Someone else may come on with more veteran advise for you, Good Luck.

HAHAHAHA! She can't get very far from them. I have them in a sweater tote in the cage. LOL There's not much room left over for her to get out. Right now she is in the floor of the cage in front of the tote. I have a blow dryer on low slightly blowing in their direction and she might have gotten hot. I gotta go check it. BRB

She just wanted out to potty. I'll put her back in a minute. I will try holding her down in a while if nothing happens and pray that the oxytocin kicks in her instincts. Isn't oxytocin the same shot that is given to help bring on the puppies? Sylvia
