Yorkie puppy born a blue/chocolate color Hello, I am new to this site but am blessed to have found it. I am hoping someone will be able to help me with something I heard about newborn yorkie pups. I have a 4 lb female that was bred to a 3 1/2 lb male. She delivered one puppy 3 days ago. The puppy seems to be doing well, gaining weight, strong and active. This puppy is a blue/chocolate color and I have never seen this before so I started trying to find some info on it. One site said that a "blue born pup" will only survive for a few days and if it does live, that it will eventually loose all of its hair and get leathery skin that is very painful to the dog. They recommended that I have the pup euthanized. This is very disturbing to me and I want to find out all that I can before even considering doing this. Any info or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Michelle |
Can you post a picture of the puppy and its parents? I have also heard of this problem with blue puppies, but you would want to be sure that is what you have. Have you had it checked by a vet? |
I do not have any advice to give you, but i would really like to see a picture your little one. |
I have never heard of this but How Scary for you !! there are some seasoned Yorkie breeders on here with a wealth of info !! I hope your puppie turns out healthy! |
Search on here for blue borns there have been alot of threads about it. Not all blue borns have health problems but alot of them have hair loss. I wouldnt euthanize the pup. There just isnt enough know about this condition |
By the way I have never seen any actual research done regarding this condition. I have seen opinions where they say you should euthanize the pup but I would never do that based on opinions alone. |
blue born pup 3 Attachment(s) I have just gone through the same as you. We had a litter that had one blue pup. I myself didn't know what was going on. I contacted AKC and they requested a photo. She told me that the pup was a Chocolate. Then, the following litter we had had two girls the same way. I came on here found out some information and now know that I have blue pups. My Dam on the second litter is a blue, but never showed any signs till the end of her pregnancy, she lost her hair in the saddle area. She is three and had a beautiful coat. She has never had any health problems and we just thought that she was a silvery/blue and tan. She is fixed now and will not be producing any more litters, the sire to the other litter was her brother and he is a gene carrier, he too is fixed now. From our experience, please don't consider euthanzing the little one. Our girl even with no hair is not in pain and very healthy. Our vet recommended limited sun time to keep her from getting burned, and to use moisturizing shampoo and even vitamin E on her back. Here are some pictures of our blue babies. And a couple of links that I found helpful in understanding the blue born IGCA : CDA http://www.dobequest.org/genotype.php colour dilution alopecia |
:thumbup::thumbup: I agree about not euthanizing the puppy. These are good sites as well. |
