A question RE nursing mommy My 4 puppies are going to be 3 weeks old and mom is doing a great job with them, but my question is .. they still seem to be hungry when she is done nursing. They have been gaining consistantly an ounce a day but act starving even when they finish nursing. I can't seem to get mom to drink very much and I wonder if she is producing enough milk. Is there anything liquid besides water I can try giving her to get her to drink more ?? Is it normal for the puppies to still seem hungry when they are finished ? Is milk bad for her ? |

Don't give her milk. You can try some pedialyte, my nursing mom loves it! You can also give the puppies some milk replacer like "Just Born". I have given it in an eyedropper to pups. Good luck! |

What kind of food is mom eating? If you are giving her moist food then she will get fluid from that. You need to make sure mom is eating lots of quality food that that will help with her milk production. If the pups cry all the time then you might need to think about supplementing them but if they just cry when she leaves them it might not be that they are still hungry but they just might not like her leaving them. I give my nursing momma dry Chicken Soup Puppy food mixed with Pedigree Lamb and Rice Puppy food. Mine have food available at all times. You could buy some puppy milk replacement formula and see if she will drink a little of that. Also, a little nutri-cal will give the mom some extra calories. |

Pedialyte will help if she is dehydrated. If I were having that problem i would give her up to 2 teaspoons of beer, it helps increase milk production (no joke) or you can also help to replenish her system by giving her a little of the milk replacer you would use for newborns (not too much though.) I have been syringe feeding (with no needle attached) water to my nursing mommy several times a day, she just licks the end while I push the plunger down , My girl is too preoccupied w/ her babies to get up too often right now, I know you shouldn't baby her that much, but I can do this if it means making sure she's getting enough water. I can give her 5 or 6 syringes full 4 or 5 times through the day ( mine hold 12 ml of water) Good luck, i think to try the syringe or the beer will work best though. ( the beer will increase milk but won't help her with dehydration) -I would do both. |
