Whelping box/pen my husband said he would like to build a whelping box for my girls and i wanted to see pics of other peoples whelping box to get some ideas. Thanks..we have a litter due any day now |

I just use a very shallow see-thru rubbermaid rectangular container that fits nicely in one end of my pack-n-play. I line it with baby blankets. I cut a hole in the mesh at one end of the pack-n-play for momma to come and go thru. The hole is up about 5 inches or so so the babies can not get over it for a few weeks. When they find the hole, it is time to move them to their larger play yard. |
thanks we are looking for some examples to go by i like the play pen idea but i cant get in there with her i want something built that has a floor |
1 Attachment(s) Attachment 272061 This is what I use. a 4X4 xpen divided into 3 compartments. The small area in the left back is the sleeping area, left front is the potty area and the right side is the eating and play area. When they are newborn up to 3 weeks, they are kept in a round bed with sides high enough so they cannot crawl out. this bed is kept in the play area. Mom can go to the sleep area if she wants to get away from them for a while. After 3 weeks I remove the bed and put then in the sleep area. I can close off the area between the potty and the play area so Mom can jump over to get away from them. They quickly learn to leave the sleep area to go to the potty area. I can let them into the play area for playtime when Mom is out, and close it back up at night. After they are weaned, they get full run of the pen. It works great and establishes right from the start to go to another area to potty. And it is right next to my computer desk where i spend a good share of my time. |

My husband bought a baby play pen. Left the sides down in a 'V' so that Abby could come and go, but the baby couldn't get out. Now that Gracie is 5 weeks old we moved her to a carrier/den (Guardian Gear-which you take in the car too) and she can come and go with ease. This is also great when we have to go some where and she is already comfortable with her carrier. |

1 Attachment(s) My husband build me some bottomless whelping boxes and I love them. I lay down a couple layers of bedding with the heating pad under the bedding and then I just sit the whelping box on top of the bedding so the heating pad is just under one side of the box. By doing it this way I do not have to worry about the momma digging up the bedding and having a puppy get lost or tangled up. I just put a small fleece blanket in the box with momma and the babies. Before I started using the bottomless boxes I was always getting woke up to babies crying in the middle of the night because they were trapped in the bedding. Now I don't have to worry about that. I have the whelping box inside a x-pen so mom has plenty of room to get out, eat, drink and use the potty pads. Here is a picture of one that my husband made. It is not really pretty but it sure works great. |

1 Attachment(s) Here is one other whelping box that I had my husband make. This one is just 8" high and 25" square. I had my husband put the posts on the side so I can put a sheet over it to create more of a den. I just attach the sheet to the posts with heavy rubber bands. I have one female that get horrified during thunderstorms so I had it build for her so she would feel more save. In this picture the sheet is not attached. You can see how the bedding is laid out and the box just sits on top. This box is not as easy to store when not in use because of the posts. The others can be stood on their ends when not in use and they make a good shelf. Also the other boxes are 12" high but if you make them shorter you don't need the entrance cutout. |
