Male determining size in breeding Hi Everyone... I'm shopping around for a pup and I was told by a breeder today that it is the male that determines the size in puppies. Logically, I know that cannot be correct, right? I almost feel stupid asking...maybe that isn't what she actually meant to say. :confused: Can someone explain what she may have meant, or if I'm way off base and she *is* correct? Thanks, J |
this has to me a myth..... my friend told me the same thing when i got toby, and started asking a whole bunch fo questions about the dad (what he looked like, hwo much he weighed..... ectt....) ...... it just does seem logical with all that we know about genetics does it? genetics states that half characteristics are inherited from either parent... nto one parent in particular because he is male.....lol...... how much you wanna bet a man made up this rule so that he can make himself feel "superior" |
size You are right to be leery of this statement..canine genetic's is no different in this area as with humans. IF it were true all a breeder would need to do is get a small male and every pup would never be oversized..does that make sense? The bloodline, which are the genes determine the size of the dog. There is a term called "prepotent"...a dog that reproduces himself over and over to some degree..but never 100%. I have had males who when bred to a large female will reduce the size in 90% of the pups...but these males were from small Yorkies, from small Yorkies, from small Yorkies. It is also not true if you breed a 3 pound male to a 12 pound female, you add the poundage and divide by two..making the pups about 7 pounders. You will get small, medium and large. 50% genes from the sires family and 50% from the dam. |
Well he determines the sex of the puppies but as for size........ummmmmm not really...... A friend of mine breeds yorkies and has a 3 1/2 lb to 4 lb male.........he looks really little too because hes stocky built, short legged in a neat little package. She bred him to two of her females, both around 6 lbs, and puppies all were bigger..longer legged, not compact looking either. He came from a bigger line of dogs and thats what he threw...........6 lbs isnt big but my firend expected maybe a couple smaller pups but it didnt happen. O........I think your right a man made that up! |
I had a litter Feb 2004 which consisted of 5 babies. The mother was 4.5 and the father was 5. I keep in touch with the new parents and the largest of the babies was a boy and is 6 pounds and the smallest in the litter is a boy and is only 19 ounces. They will be a year old in a couple of weeks. You can see this litter from newborn to current on my webpage www.simplyyorkies.com The little tiny one Dobby, is on the main page. MoGraceLiz...... on the site you listed i saw puppies with a white "star" on their chest........ is it really white or is it the camera used???? ..... and if it is white does it stay this way all thier lives or just when they are puppies? |
Orinsky, It's really a white spot. His mother, Liz, can be viewed on the adults page in the center at the very bottom, and if you look carefully, you can see her's also. The litter of 4 babies of Grace's, there are two with the white on the chest and a couple have white toes. Of course as their hair grows out, it isn't as visible. Kim |
Cute yorkies! I have puppies like that too, with white toes (on back) and one has a large white area on her chest........but like you said it is not as noticeable as their hair grows. |
is this a normal trait? i thought yorkies were only supposed to be tan and black........ and i thought the white was a biewer trait :confused: |
I cant find the article I once found talking about small white markings on yorkies. I dont think its really that unusual. My Duke had it too, white spot on his chest and two white toes in back but you cant ever tell its there now......its like white toes never existed and the white spot on his chest is now about two hairs that you have to search for on his chest. The Biewer pictures I have seen with newborn puppies is they are very white with smaller dark markings, almost like a beagle puppy, with spots of color. |
