Help! How do i make an at home AI kit? Im on day 14 of heat. The male seems to not be able to perform. I think im gonna have to use an AI kit but i cant find one local and by the time one got here in the mail it would be to late. There is no place local that sells them or does AI. Is there any way i can do a myguver type of AI kit? Or atleast get some of the supplies at Petco or Petsmart? Any suggestions would be a help. Thank you in advance! |
NO, you can't make one at home. You haven't done a AI yet have you? You will need to have your vet order it and he will have to do the AI. They can get them over night. I highly suggest you don't do it yourself. Especially if you never did it before. Do you realize how long the AI tube is and how far it needs to go in? If you haven't done it, don't. You could perforate that little girl. And I don't know where your male came from, but if you want to register the pups, a vet needs to witness the AI or perform it to fill out the necessary paperwork to register them. AKC will not recognize a AI unless witnessed or performed by a vet. You won't find one local. They don't sell them at stores. |
I think you need to ask for the help of your vet...you could end up hurting your female if you try this at home. It sounds to me like you're going to wait for the next heat if they won't do this naturally. I've found that if you leave them alone and supervise from a distance they will find a way for nature to take it's course. I also believe everything happens for a reason...if it doesn't work out this time maybe it will next time. Please see your vet for assistance with this. |
Im just giving up on it all together. No local vet is a 50 mile radius do it. |
Oh I know how frustrated you are! My Shih Tzu, Lola, came into heat, then waited a whole year to come into heat again. She came into heat, and refused to be bred. I held her and everything (I have a nice story on here about nearly getting my eye "shot out" if you do a search and need a good laugh) and it DID NOT happen. To my surprise, she actually came into heat again 5 months later, instead of a year. This was just a month ago. I was so happy, and thought for sure, now that she is nice and mature, that it would happen. It didnt. I was so dang upset and discouraged!! I am doing all my AI research now to prepare for her next heat. It is so very upsetting and discouraging. She just does not want to do it at all. I am hoping that when Lilly comes into heat next time she will allow Diesel to breed with her. I am hoping Lola didnt have a talk with her and get her on her team  What's with these frigid girls. |
Are you separating them, then putting them together alone where they cannot see you? They might be picking up your anxiety. Does the female seem more dominant then the male? How far does he get when he tries to breed her? |

Haha, I loved that post! |
I took my Rocky and Sammie to the vet today to have AI performed... this is Sammie's 4th heat and I've never seen them tie... I sit with them all the time trying to "help them along". Rocky is experienced.. he's 7 1/2 years old. I've never experienced the AI procedure before .... kind of a let down... all that's involved is a gloved hand, a syringe and a long tube. ;) I thought it would be more scientific. The most exciting part was looking in the microscope at a sample of Rocky's sperm... that was cool!! Oh... and the funny thing is... you do have to raise the female's butt up in the air for about 3 to 4 minutes after the procedure!:D |
Well thank you to everyone for your help but sadly nothing has happened and the stud goes home today. So next time i will be prepared and will plan AI so i dont have to worry about the male being able to perform next time. |
I hope the AI takes. It isn't really all that easy at first. As you insert the tube you have to go up at a certain point and then in. If you just put it straight in, you just lost it in folds. With experience it will get easy. If it was just a matter of putting the tube straight in, I never would have lost all my dog's sperm in my females folds. I ended up learning the right way by other more experienced breeders teaching me. Thank God for them, lol |
