millie 5th pup losing weight urgent advice please The other pups have gained between 3-6 g over night the smallest one has lost 4 g although suckling well, i thought it would be essential while it is sucking to get the colostrum in the milk, millie seems to be looking after her well. i have bottles and milk ready to make up, should i start or leave a little while longer? |
I am no expert, but from everything I've read a newborn pup should NOT be losing weight. I would start supplementing although since I've had no experiance with it I don't know what to tell you in the how much or often. I am sure there are threads here on the subject. There is also the sticky in this forum for a "fading puppy" recipie. You might try that. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will come on to help you, but I think supplementing is needed. Good luck with the baby, I'll say some prayers. |
Giving the little one some won't hurt. Just make sure she gets lots of Mommy milk and a little supplement. JMO |
i have done some research which says it not unusual for them to lose weight in first 24 hr, still worried as it is the smallest but it seems to be suckling no wimpers, i will weigh tonight and then proceed with advice given hopefully, thanks again in advance, i will get husband to put pics on tonight, i dont have a clue how to do this. |

Instead of the supplement, you might also want to try to put her at Mommy's teat more often when others are asleep. |
You could also check for a cleft palate. These little ones cannot get suction if they have one. Good luck , I hope it starts gaining weight for you.:( |
thats a good idea, sucking nicely while others are asleep, i will check mouth when finished feeding seems a shame to disturb at minute, hoping not. all lookformed well, and no hare lip, i forgot about cleft pallet i done all this reading, and i been so concern they breathing and feeding i will check soon, i frightened now, would it have to be put to sleep, it would suffer to much. |
I have heard of one lady who nursed her cleft pallet dog and raised him but he requires special care and she was not able to sell him, she kept him I believe. I imagine some types would not be able to do that to, I'll bet each case is different. Don't be scared yet. I would think it is more likely that he just needs to have 1 on 1 time nursing if he's the runt, just check into that before you get scared, I didn't mean to scare you. |
If you do supplement, can you "milk" a little from your momma dog instead of using the storebought stuff? I know the first couple of days are all important that they get the antibodies from the momma so they are disease resistant. |
i have been puttting pup on teat while others are asleep gained 2g in 24 hrs, one has gained 8g he allways crying i think he has wind he greedy, there prob not much left by time hes had her. the little one has had the first 36 hrs now so i going to try a little supplement. i am just sterilizing bottles, the can says 150 ml over 24 hr, so if i feed supplement every 4 hr then can have one feed on teat and one bottle, will approx 70ml divide by 6 for 6 feeds be about the right amount for each feed ie about 12 ml per feed. thanks |

Anxious to see pics of the little ones and mom when you can. |
I relly wouldn't give too much supplement unless he is not gaining maybe two to four times a day if you must. Mom's milk is still the best for them and some gain at a much slower rate then others |
yeaaaaa, glad my suggestion worked. I had to do that with one of mine once. |
You can also give them some DYNE or stick some nutra cal on its tongue... |
