Eclammpsia i have read so much conflicting advice. please put the record straight. do you give calcium foods only when she has delivered. i read to give in pregnancy so i give her some cottege cheese last week, then i read it is the worst thing you can do so she has had only one small tub over 3 days. Will it have done her any harm. she is day 64 today and has no signs other than a temp of 37.3 that has been the same on each reading for 2 and half days. thanks in advance again |
I had the same question when my Taffy was pregnant and I joined a dog repro only group and they advise me to only start the calcium supplements AFTER she had whelped..I did not even give her the whelping pudding until she was in stage two of whelping. I hope this helps you a bit. hugs, Carmen in nj |
i only give it AFTER whelping but do give my bitch puppy food before. |
I like to give my pregnant bitch cottage cheese too. It is recommended to stop all supplement, calcium, vitamins and puppy food about 1 weeks prior the due date. When the labor and contractions have start, I chew a TUMS and spit it in her mouth. (for the calcium). I also give Vanilla ice cream to the female between puppies. It is refreshing and also good source of calcium. |

Eclampsia scare My Lola gave birth one week ago tomorrow 10:00 am CST. Her four pups are all gaining weight and seem to be doing well. She seems a bit restless although sleeping now and is panting alot. I'm assuming it's hot having four puppies suckling all the time but I'm starting to get a bit concerned considering some of the symptoms of eclampsia. It's 11:30 pm right now and I really don't want to make a trip to the vet if this is nothing. Help! Thanks in advance. Newbie to Yorkietalk..Liz |
how is your dog doing now? did you go to vet my dog is on her 1st day after whelp she is panting to i think it is cause the heat mat on, did you take her temp? |
Lojo4, I sent you a private message last night. My moms get so engrossed in the puppies especially the first two weeks, that I have to hand feed them and give water via a syringe, they lap it up as I'm squirting it out. The whelping pudding has been very helpful. I also give calicum magnesium that has vit. d and k. Crush it up and hide it in cheese or something they like. I also sleep near them so that I can hear if my mom starts panting. Hope this helps, Cheryl |
Eclampsia Thanks so much....Lola is going great. The next morning I took her to the vet and got some blood work done. Her calcium levels were normal so the panting is just heat related which I can understand. Four, aggressive puppies sucking, tugging, etc....I'd be hot too. Her babies have doubled their birth weight and doing great.:) |
Thanks for posting, so glad Lola and the pups are doing well. |
