Is this possible???? I tried to breed my female 7 weeks ago and he got in and would not tie with her ...i tried again 2 days later and the same thing happened. The studs mom emailed me 2 weeks ago to inform me that one of her females is pregnant and did not tie and to watch my girl for pregnancy. So either she is having a really good false pregnancy or she is pregnant...she is so big, swollen volva, pronounced teets that have changed color, frequent urination, lazy and the usual clear discharge when wiped. I was unsure during her last litter until this week also. Has anyone ever had a female get prego without a tie? |
I know with mine, they only tied once, the other two times they didn't and had 3 puppies.:) |
Do you think that she had the additional pups from the 2 times they did not tie? I always thought that there had to be a tie for pregnancy to happen and not just like an in and out for 20 seconds(sorry for being so graffic) |
There does NOT have to be a tie for pregnancy to occur. It sounds like you may want to get ready for puppies. I would rather be safe than sorry. |
Yup, just takes one little sperm and you have a puppy on the way. It can even happen with almost no penetration. I'd sure have her checked out to be sure. You will want to be prepared. |
What you are describing is what we call a slip tie. It can cause pregnancy. The symptoms you are describing definitely say pregnancy (esp. the clear discharge). I would be ready for puppies. Do you know what dates these slip matings occured? Do you have an expected whelp date? |

Sorry, I should have clarified. I mean especially. |
To clear up some confusion that this thread might cause, the number of times they breed (tie or not) has absolutely zip to do with the number of puppies. What matters is how many eggs are present, ripen, and are fertilized by viable sperm that are present at the right time. The purpose of multiple breedings is to try to insure that there are viable sperm present at the point that the ovum are capable of being fertilized. That is why you can do fewer breedings if you use progesterone testing or LH surge testing-- because then you have an idea of when ovulation occurs. It is also a good way to have a much more firm whelping date that if you just operate off of the dates of breedings. |
