1st Time Breeding
 
Hi Yorkie Talk!

I am breeding my Yorkie tomorrow. This is my first time on my own, I have helped my friend whelp Akitas in the past so i have some experience just not a lot. Does anyone have any words of wisdom for me? Im am so excited. =] Also is there any book out there that is a complete guide to breeding small dogs? Akitas are big dogs and im sure a breeding and whelping of a Yorkie is far different than that of an Akita, so im looking for something to help me out step by step.

The best book I know is Muriel Lee's book. Can't remember the name right now but it is a fantastic book on whelping puppies. Good luck tomorrow.

That first site has pages and pages and pages of info, on everything you want to know about with dogs. Spend some time looking and there is so much it will keep you busy!

Yes, breeding Yorkies would be a lot different than Akitas. Any breed has specific little quirks that you have to be aware of. The best advice I could give you would be to get a mentor who breeds YORKIES and prepare BEFORE you ever attempt to actually breed yourself.
Educating yourself on breeding and all that it entails is something you should do in advance, not something that you pick up as you go after you have bred your little one.

I did a lot of research but you dont really know till you see it first hand. But nothing happened and the stud goes back today. I guess it just wasnt ment to be. But next time im going to plan to use AI ahead of time.

Yes, you don't really know until you see it first hand, which can be done responsibly by working with a mentor...seeing the the whole process first hand with THEIR dogs first while learning and preparing yourself to start the process with your own dogs LATER. :)

Someone sent me a couple websites to start reading, and I also bought a veterinary book that sells for $30(I bought on ebay for $12.95 with no s&h charges.)
I am going to be getting a biewer pup to use for breeding, and this is going to be my first time as well.

Has your dog had an Acid Bile Test to see if she has any Liver Shunts? Also the male. What about Luxating patellas have they been checked.These are Genetic disorders very common in Yorkies and small breeds. These can also come back and bite you when your pups are sold. I dont mean to be rude just concerned. Lissette
