I have been a breeder for a couple of years now and I have two males. The first I used for a stud but is now nuetered due to undescended testicle. He never marked my house. My present stud tinkles everywhere. He is a little over a year old and was completely pee pad trained at 5 months at about 7 months I guess hormones kicked in and he marks everywhere he can. I have tried training him to go outside but he will still tinkle where he can in the house. If he is not playing with a toy he is constantly sinffing and peeing. Granted it is only a few drops here and there but that is the problem, it is so small that often you don't find it for a few days. I have two kids, a four year old little boy and a two year old little girl, so toys are everywhere through my home. I feel awful when we find that my male has tinkled a few drops on their blocks or a babydoll. I bought a belly band for him but I haven't yet used it. He has a long coat and I figured it would cause it to mat or irritate his skin. He is only four pounds and the band is the smallest I could find but it still looks huge. I wondered if anyone could offer me some advice. Is this common of all studs or is mine on hormonal overdrive?

Thanks for the welcome and advice. What do you do about the coat when it is wrapped in the band?

If preserving a long show coat it is best to wrap the coat in packets and then apply the band. For an easier 'do' just part the coat on either side of where the Band goes and comb to the front and back. You will need to comb out some snarls every evening, but it shouldn't mat too badly if you are dealing with a silk coat.

Thanks so much, it is very uplifting to finally find others devoted to yorkies as breeders and pets alike. My yorkies are my pets first and then only allowed to be bred if all conditions are healthy. I can not stand the idea of simply caging them nonstop due to a marking problem. I want them to enjoy life and share in the happiness of the family also, breeding is second to that. Thanks again!

Welcome to YT. My mom's maltese male mats around the belly band and she just brushes him out every night. I started making her bands with a satiny lining with flannel in between the layers, seems to help quite a bit. You can also spray with a good leave in conditioner like Ice on Ice before you put the band on, that might help (also will help to keep coat from breaking). Once you start using a belly band you will feel so much better.

Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I have never had a male Yorkie so can't offer much advise on "marking" but I have read that the belly bands work wonders.

I am not a breeder but I use a bellyband on my neutered male occasionally when I travel or visit friends especially. It is a wonderful invention! I love your philosophy about allowing your breeding dogs to enjoy life and not be caged 24/7. I wish more breeders felt that way and allowed their males more time in the house with the family.

Thanks to all of you for your advice, it has worked wonders! I used the band yesterday after reading some of your replies and life is totally changed. All of my dogs were able to run around the house all day and everyone was happy, even my children. They were happy to play with the dogs without worrying about Pumpkinbear(my stud) peeing on everything. Now I need to find some more belly bands a little more custom to his size and a bit fancier than the one I have from petsmart. I live in Suffolk Virginia in regards to the question from Shecass.

Just a bit of caution....belly bands and panties will not stop them from getting to a female in heat if they are on a mission. So if you are trying to prevent unplanned breedings you do need to separate them for the duration of the heat cycle. They have houdini- like capabilities to get out the things when the hormones take over. :)

I totally understand that one. My babies actually have their own room in my house with exercise pens set up. This works so I can separate during heats and it makes a great whelping area for my moms. When my puppies are weaned each litter gets their own exercise pen full of toys, beds,their pee pads and food and water. I just let the puppies out several times a day in the room or my kitchen for a free run playtime. I use the infant excercise pens because they are made of durable plastic, easy to clean, and the holes on the sides are small enough to contain puppies with no way for them to get hurt, not to mention they are only 50 bucks at Toys r Us and 80-90 at Petsmart.
