Need help Latching on My tiny that was born first doesn't seem to know how to latch on. Any ideas other that just opening up for her. I've done that and she clamps down and then releases again. |
Have you checked for cleft palate? Squeeze a little milk out of the nipple and put the pups nose to it so she can smell it, that usually gets them opening. Also you can try a little karo syrup on the nipple. Check for dehydration. You should weigh them 2X a day to be sure they are gaining. |

I just talked with vet and he thought it was possible that her tougne was swelled that she was not latching on well. I got a little of moms milk into her along with a supplement of Pro-biolac replacer milk from the vet. She took that well. Hopefully it will give her enough strenght to latch on soon. |
Her weight this morning was .2 oz less than birth. She was only 2.2 at birth and now 2 oz. |
sometimes they will lose a tiny bit the morning after they are born, then they should see a steady uphill climb. But, you might go two or three days without much of a gain then see several ounces at once. I squeeze a little of moms milk out and rub the nose in it just like someone else said. An old tried and true wives tale. Put a little salvia on your finger and then open the puppies mouth around that teat. Also, with one this little, you are going to have to make sure that the larger ones don't pussh her away. You might even have to take your hand and hold her on the teat. When I have a tiny one like that, I put it on the fullest teat and hold my hand between that pup and the others. They are usually so weak that even if they do latch on, they can't hold on and push. |

I'll keep working with her using all the advice that has been given. Thanks again |
I lost the 1st tiny one Sorry to tell you all this but the first tiny one passed away during the night Tuesday. She just wasn't strong enough to survive. Something just didn't seem alright with her from the start. It brakes my heart to have to bury one so little. I still have four girls. One of which is also tiny. I've been watching her close and also supplementing her some. She seems to be doing better that the 1st. Poor momma Lacie, just couldn't understand what happened. |
i am so sorry for your loss. I am sure you are doing everything you can. Sometimes, it just happens. I lost a tiny 2oz one about a year ago. |
I'm so sorry for your loss...I just had a litter of 4 tinies the smallest was born 1 oz and the largest 3.8 ounces. I have supplimented them every 3 hours for the first 3 days and now they are all gaining well and doing great. I know its difficult with tinies but make sure you suppliment the smaller ones if needed. Trust me if you try to feed them and they dpon't want to eat they will push the food away. |
I am sorry for your loss. I know what it's like. I lost one of my babies when it was 2 days old. It was the first born. I know how difficult it is. I hope that the other tiny continues to thrive and do well. I hope that the momma will do well too. |
