MOM can't keep her food down - help! I have a little girl who delivered early Friday morning. We had three stillborns and one healthy girl. Vet said placentas had detached, but found no infection nor did Mom have temperature. We gave her fluids, an oxytocin shot, she's on Clavamox, did a radiograph to ensure no retained puppies. Mom won't eat. I am syringe feeding her A/D and giving nutrical - but she throws everything back up. Any suggestions on how to settle her stomach, so she can retain some food. I have to get her appetite back. |
When did you last see the vet? It sounds like she needs to go back. Have you called your vet this morning? Have you checked her temp today? Infections can come on quickly when their bodies are so worn down after delivery |
I would talk to your vet. Good luck.:) |
Of course, I have an appt this morning and need to leave in about 30 minutes to go back. I am asking for a homeo pathic type remedy to help settle her stomach. I am not convinced that the vet can help me with that. |
I'm sorry, I did not mean to upset you. :) Have you tried chicken broth? Clear liquids would be best. Or have you tried plain natural yogurt? |
Well, I'm upset because my little girl feels so crappy. Not your comments. Sorry if I seemed abrupt. I've just returned from the vet, her temp is a little low and heart rate a little low. Can't find any signs of infection - but believe her uterus to be hard and enlarged still - tho nothing shows on radio graph. Kept her for IV fluids and anti-nausea meds. I will be picking her up later today. The vet is even discussing the possiblity of euthansia if I choose. This is so horrible, this little girl is my baby and sleeps on my bed every nite. I am quite distraught. I was hopeful that someone would know a holistic anti nausea remedy. I hated leaving her there - away from her one puppy and away from her home. |

Is it that extensive to have to consider euthanasia? BJH sometimes suggests pumpkin and it is either for diahrea or vomiting, I can't remember which one... (not the spiced kind, just plain pumpkin in a can) I didn't realize she was that bad off. I really hope someone else comes along with a nice remedy to try. Maybe you might consider another opinion , by a different vet? I am sorry I don't have any solid advise for you besides that. I sincerily hope you get a solution for your baby. You could also try to attatch the word emergency in your thread to get some more readers? Best wishes to you. Maybe she could just get a histerectomy?(sp)-just an idea to talk to the vet about. |
I really feel like that baby of yours should maybe get another opinion by another vet before you go down that road.... :( |

I agree you need a different vet. Start checking around. I go to a holistic/acupuncture vet - he is closed on Mondays or I would say call him. But here are some sites where you can find a holistic vet in your area. AHVMA - Home IVAS Vet Search American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture » AAVA Directory I am so sorry you are going thru all of this. |
I have never had a female vomit after birth but I would suggest you give her nutrical and pedialyte. What kind of food was she on prior to having puppies? I always feed mine canned Pedigree Lamb and Rice Puppy food mixed with their dry food. She may have a bacterial infection in her stomach. Did she eat any afterbirth? Hopefully the IV fluids will help her. I will say a pray for you little girl. Rosiegirl, canned pumpkin is just for diarrhea or constipation, it works for both. |
I've been giving nutrical and mixing some with water. I am rather at my wit's end when the vet says, there is no infection and she's crashing like this. I could understand them keeping her for 3 days, as they requested to do, if they could give me a health reason for her being so down. BUT thinking that it may be emotional/mental makes me believe that she will 'give up' if stuck that long away from family and her baby. SO, I'm saying prayers for her and thank you for your prayers. |
I will be praying for you as you try to care for her little one. There is another gal on YT who just lost her mother like 3 days after delivery and I think she is caring for 5 newborn pups - if you need that advice too - I could look fo rthat thread for you. I will also be praying for your girl and the care that she is receiving :hands: Will they let you come to the vet and visit her? |
Yes. They are making her very available for me whenever I can visit her.. altho I will need to get back to work eventually! = ) or no more $$ for the vet! I did read the first part of that thread re: YTer losing a Mom. If you could let me know who it is (I'll search too).. I'm sure I'm gonna need someone to answer questions. Right now, the little girl is strong and wanting to nurse from an eyedropper. And going potty as well. I just am so worried about both of them, right now. Thank you for being here. This site is a God send in times like these. |
Here's that thread http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...s-w-o-mom.html I'm glad you can see her - I always think that helps them improve. Who will care for the pup if you are at work? So hard when they need to be feed every 2 hrs when they are newborn |
