Help?? I have a male and female yorkie. Nala is going to be a year old March 30th and Simba is already 3. I am afraid Nala might be pregnant. She went into heat in late december and we kept the two separate for 5-6 weeks. We read up on the sign of her going into heat and separated them immediately as I knew she was too young to get pregnant. The vet told us 4 weeks after the bleeding stopped was long enough. But now Nala's nipples are getting big her tummy was hanging a few days ago now is getting firm and bigger. Could she be pregnant? Can anyone tell me if there are any other tell tale signs i should be looking for? What do you think is going on here? All advice is welcomed and appreciated! |
If they were separated she could just be experiencing a pseudo pregnancy. Hope that is all the case! |

You might take Nala to the vet for an x-ray. Better to be safe than sorry. |
It could be a false pregnancy....sure sounds like you kept them apart plenty long enough. A female's fertile period is normally between days 9 thru 16. After a first heat cycle, I found that their teats and vulva do not go completely back to their pre-heat size. The nipples stay a little more prominent and the vulva, though no longer swollen, will be a bit bigger than it was before. My female had her first heat last November & there was a time after, that I too wondered about her being PG, even though I knew she could not be. For reference now and in the future, this website Canine Reproduction Video and Book on Breeding and Whelping dogs by Debbie Jensen for dog breeders and Whelping Supplies needed to deliver puppies. is packed will helpful information from breeding to weaning. Good luck to you! and welcome to YT! |

In my opinion she's most likely experiencing a false pregnacy......but, it's better to be safe than sorry. If she is, you'd better get your supplies ready and I do hope you have an experienced breeder close by to help you. Another good book is How to buy and raise a healthy dog by Terri Shumski....great info on whelping, and caring for mom and the litter. |
Thanks so much for all of your replies... I am definitely going to take her to the vet. I would rather be safe than sorry. I will keep you updated! Thank you for all of your wonderful advice! |
Interesting.. I am curious about the update... for it did sound like you kept them apart long enough.. but that also depends on how you kept them apart.. for being in a cage close together will not keep them apart.. and it takes such a few minutes.. a friend just swore to me she kept them apart.. babies are on the way..and she says 100%... I have actually taken a dog to a friend for three weeks to ensure I did not have a pregnacy that was not a good time.. anne |
