HELP... acid bile test I just had my 2 Yorkies tested for acid bile testingand my female was pre 56 ( normal is 0-6) post was 49 9normal0-15) my male pre 5 , post 41. I am going into my vetsoffice to speak with them on Thurs morning. Someone please help me and let me know what this means I know it not good. does this mean they both have liver problems?? They shouldn't be breed now right?? If so I am going after the breeder I bought my female from because she has been nothing but sick since I bought her in November. |

Whether they should be bred or not depends on if those results are not skewed by something. Some things that could possible skew the results are certain drugs given a week or two before the test (we don't know what ones these are, so all drugs should be avoided before testing), smelling food before the test (some would say), the gallbladder contracting while the blood is being drawn, a high protein diet (again only some would say it is related), etc. If those numbers do stay up, there is a strong possibility of a liver functioning problem and they should not be bred. You may want to retest in a month before jumping into too much testing if they are asymptomatic. Don't give any drugs within a couple weeks of the test though. |
Cali was tested twice and her scores were 0/90 and then 0/48 or close to that. She had a liver biopsy and was diagnosed with very mild MVD. She needs no treatment but the specialist said to notify her breeder and let her know as they should not continue to breed her parents. Hopefully something skewed the results on your babies. |
Normal bile acids are less than 25, so both of them have abnormal bile acids. Less than 100 usually indicates MVD. The next step would be a Protein C test: Comparative Coagulation -- NYS Animal Health Diagnostic Center MVD dogs should not ever be bred as the condition is genetic. tx... right now it doesn't feel so good. I love all my dogs they are my pets first... I have had my female on antibiotics for the last 3 weeks she is done tomorrow. I have been giving her her meds in Peanut butter. I wonder if that has done something??I am also wondering if she is coming into her first heat?? Could these have any effect on the test? |
I doubt that the heat would affect results. Is theis the dog with the urinary problem? Did the vet say what type of crystals were found? |
I would not breed them if their bile acids are high, but I would also recommend retesting at some point. High bile acids aren't always MVD or Liver shunt, although they are very common in yorkies. My yorkie had high bile acids and was diagnosed with hepatic lipidosis and did not have MVD. I would retest after a period of time with no medications and then do further testing from there. and i too think it is wonderful that you tested your dogs first! I know you will be so disapointed if you aren't able to breed them, but it's best to make sure you have the best chance of bringing healthy puppies into this world |
what is a good age to do a bile acid test? Can age play a role in test results? |

yes this is the same dog with urinary problem. I am getting copies of all her test results tomorrow so I will have everything. I can't remember right now what crystal but the vet said they were from bladder infection or sometimes when a female is coming into heat they can have then in the urine. I am going to suggest that I switch diet and then retest in at least 2 months maybe longer depends on what vets say's. tx everyone. |

If they are not symtomatic, I would check on their diet and reduce fat intake. I have seen elevated BAT with some eating high fat diets. I would retest in 30 days. I would not breed them though. |
I do not plan on breed them yet. My female is not old enough and I want al testing done first. Right now doesn't look like I'll be bredding either. :( Hopefully that will change when I change there diets. |
well I'm still at a loss.... I am thinking of trying another vet... They said my female needs to be retested because her test results are not right..DUHHHHH..... They had no clue what MVD and PSVA was.... The lab tech told them according to male's blood work he has a very mild MVD. I thought that had to be diagnosed with liver biopsy??? The lab told my vet I can still use him for breeding ???? If everyone fixed dogs with a mild MVD there would be no Yorkies???? I so don't even know??? I also researched that if any hemolysis showed on the report that is from the lab doing something and the plasma has mixed with the white blood cells. I wish I saved the site cause I can't find it now. If so the test results are inacurate and have to be retested...... I have been told by several people if my female is o.k. then breed them and test the pups.... Nobody knows where it comes from if it is even heriditary.... Can anyone help out with this????? |

You cannot diagnose it without a liver biopsy but if all other tests are normal except the bile acids, some vets just say it is MVD in Yorkies because it is so common. Those numbers for the male do indicate MVD but they cannot possibly say that for sure. The female could have MVD, a shunt or something altogether different. |
I have been talking with a canine nutritionaist and she say's to put my Yorkies on wet food instead of kibble. Feed sweet potatoe and oatmeal mixed for 3 months then retest. She has given me a name of anothe vet to use.... I figure it can't hurt what have I got to loose.... |

most likely Rayal canine.. Cook sweet potatoe and oatmeal.. mix freeze in ice cube trys and give 1 daily as a treat. |
