hello. i just bought my baby jorkie (he's 7 wks young) and the breeder told me not to shower him until he gets all his shots:confused: but he really needs a shower. especially his paws... needs some cleaning. any suggestions?? please &&

Sorry, I won't be much help, but maybe just use a soapy wet cloth and rinse him with clean water??? This may help!

I don't understand why you can't do that. I am no expert and hopefully an experienced breeder can elaborate for you but I have no clue why she might say that. I am curious to see what others may think.:confused:

yes... i am not sure either. she gave me a whole "not to do" list...

Bathing them as soon as you get them home is very stressful for a new pup, not to mention all of the other changes .....traveling, new home, new ppl. Alot of firsts and additional stresses maybe? To much all at once? :aimeeyork:animal-pa:animal-pa

but he seems really comfortable and happy now =) its actually been about two weeks since i brought him home... any advice on what shampoo and conditioner to use... what about a blow dryer??

Hi & welcome to YT. Well I don't know what having all the shots has to do with bathing, but I just think that 7 weeks is a little young to be going through the stress of a full fledged bath. I agree to just use a warm wash cloth and kind of give him a "bath" that way. I agree that a full bath would be stressful on him and/or he may get chilled.

It sounds like he is doing okay from what you wrote, but I must add that in your original post when you wrote that he is 7 weeks, my first thought was that 7 weeks is a bit young not only for a bath, but much to young to be away from his mom and siblings. Then later you write that you've had him for about 2 weeks already?!!!!!!!! So you got this pup at about 5 weeks of age:confused: I'm no expert, but that sounds too young for any breed to be taken from it's mama, much less a yorkie. Pups normallly aren't even fully weaned at that age and they need more time with mom & siblings to learn important socialization skills. JMO

I also noticed that you typed jorkie. Was that a typo or are we talking a mixed breed? Maybe your pup is larger, which would help, but still too young to be away from his first home. I truely hope that he is doing well and continues to do well. You've come to the right place for help as there are many knowledgable people here who love yorkies. Good luck with your new baby.............we'd love to see pics of him and learn more about him.

Whoa....that's what I was thinking too. If that is the case, then I'm not sure how much advice I'd actually take to heart from the "breeder." :thumbdown

OK OK OK. haha. im sorry. yes. it was a typo. i meant to say yorkie. and i got him at 6 wks... its been 1 1/2 week that ive had him... so he is 7 1/2 weeks old. i have heard that the "best" age to get a yorkie is at 12 wks. but i didnt not read about it until after i got my pup. he has adjusted well though. he is super playful and does not seem stressed at all. maybe the only day that he did sleep in his crate was the first two nights. and after that he cried to be let out... also, i do have pictures of him... they are in my album... im just not sure how to post them up here... i will be putting some up soon though. thank you so so much... and im glad im part of YT

I can't see why a bath would hurt - it's not like he's going to catch a virus from water... When are you going to the vet next? I'd just ask the vet to see if there is some reason we're not thinking of, but, really, I can't imagine why it would be a problem. Bath time is traumatic, especially the first bath, so I'd start by just doing his private areas and legs - don't do the head the first time. That'll make it easier. Or, you could fill a little plastic tub or sink with an inch or so of soapy water and just do his paws.

Are you sure that the breeder didn't mean to a groomers? I told my buyers not to take them to a groomers until they had all their shots. There are too many germs in a place like that.

Giving them baths does stress them out quite a lot. I would recommend the same, a sponge bath as my mom called it. You might want to try the bath wipes that are sold in the pet stores if you think that he's too messy IMO.

yes, im sure... the list strictly says not to bath him or even wet him... well. i took him to the vet the next day i got him. and he looked healthy. his next vet apt is on the 5th =) i do use the wipes to clean him. thank you so much!
and... when i do start bathing him. what shampoo and conditioner should i use??

I really don't see why bathing him would be a problem if he has had time to adjust to your home, so long as he is dried well and kept warm. I know that in regards to my past litters, they had all been bathed by that age.
(My personal preference is to use diluted Johnson's baby wash when they are young.)

Personally, I won't bath a pup that young. I would maybe wash the paw in some warm water and the butts and wee wee area and then dry them off really well. Puppies do get a chill easily so why risk it?
