1st Heat, Unsure of Stage? Well All, I have been really watching my little girl for at least a good month now as she has been showing signs of going into heat (her first one, 10 months old). And needless to say that she went into heat when I was away on vacation supporting my little sister at the Colorado State Wrestling tourney (Lauryn Bruggink, 2nd female to make it to state (So Excited!)). I left my dogs with my husband while I was away, but they were unsupervised for most of the 4 days due to his work schedule, and kept locked up together in our laundry room. The question I have for experienced breeders is: we have caught the heat and she has light pink mucus going on right now. I am now keeping them seperated when they go outside, and I have a belly band and diaper on both of them when they are together. So what I really need to know is if I caught the heat cycle early enough to prevent pregnancy (no pink mucus before I left). She hasn't been flagging for my male (6 months) nor has she let him mount her, but she has been letting him lick her occasionally today and he hasn't left her side. Any advise would be greatly apprechiated.:( |
Update, So with the diaper being on there are actually spots of blood and not mucus. Even with all my research I'm still worried that I caught it to late. I don't believe that they have tied at all, but I can't say for sure. |
Sometimes females on their first heat do not bleed a lot. Since your male is only 6 months old and not showing much interest most likely he has not bred her. Just be sure to keep them separated for the duration of her heat. Most of the time the female is not receptive to the male until around the 9th day of her heat cycle. |
My male is interested and has occasionally tried to mount her for the past two months (more often now that I really watch), but my female is not having anything to do with that. They still run around and play, but once he tries to mount her she snaps at him. I just didn't want to have missed a possible tying while I was away. There wasn't any blood or pink mucus when I left on Thursday that I noticed, so hopefully she is just in the first few days of her heat. |
Well, you may have caught it early enough but I suppose the only thing to do is to keep an eye on her and see if she becomes responsive in the next few days. If so, you probably caught it. If not, you might be off in your calculations and something might have have happened earlier. Though I know when my girls are due for their cycle, I don't see signs of it for a month earlier. For now, just keep a close eye on them when they're together, don't trust the belly band and diaper and don't leave them alone together. |

I keep them crated up together at night (in a crate with a wire seperator), but I have restricted the access the male would have to the female by blocking the openings with a sheet of cardboard at night. I live in a small house so there is hardly a time that I don't have an eye on them, but I will be sure to keep track of them even more. I'm not fully trusting the diaper and belly band as my female has already ripped the diaper off 4 times in the past two hours, so I am going to go buy some onesies as well to help reduce the chances of tying on top of using the diapers and belly bands. I will also be keeping an eye on the female to see if she become more responsive to the male, to make sure that I caught it early enough. Thanks for the help. |

Thanks everyone Well update here. I had read on here yesterday about using baby onesies instead of a diaper and that has been such great advise. My little girl barely weighs in at 5 lbs so the newborn onesies fit well. I add in a new pad after each potty break (with me watching them closely outside) and cut a place for her tail. Now to put one on the little man (under 3 lbs so I need to sew it some) with a belly band for extra security. I have figured out that she is somewhere between her 3rd(Monday) and 6th(Friday, when I was gone on vacation) day of her heat cycle, I noticed her pulling across the floor monday morning, and caught the bleeding last night. So I am keeping a close eye on her (still no flagging), cause my little male is now going crazy during supervised play time. Other than that they are being seperated until I can sew up a belly band for the little guy, and are sepereated except for supervised play time and supervised potty time. Thanks for all the help everyone! |
