Milk production Is there any thing natural that might help milk production? The babies are not crying and are eating but when I squeeze the nipple nothing comes out. One has not lost anything and the other has lost about 0.2 oz not sure if that is even anything, I am just making sure they are just 2 days old. They move around and dont act like anything is wrong not do they apear dehiderated. Thanks for any help CHristina |
If one of your babies doesn't seem to be gaining, you can remove the other pups for a few minutes and give it time to nurse without competition. To help Mom make milk you can try this whelping pudding recipe. Here's a link to it...http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/1293603-post7.html You can also try giving her yogurt or cottage cheese to help provide her more calcium. When you take the babies in for their tail docking you can bring Mom in too for an oxytoxin shot. It will help to clean her out and stimulate milk production. When you try to check Mom for milk, squeeze one of the rear teats. Sometimes you have to make a pulling motion as you squeeze much like a baby nursing. Your pups should all be gaining now but sometimes one will be slower to gain. Keep checking the weight and check for dehydration. To check for that just pull up on the skin along the back and see if it springs back down quickly. You can compare a pup you know is thriving to any one you suspect may not be eating enough to get an idea. |
I have read that a teasoon or table spoon of beer will help with production in dogs. I remember it sure increased my production when I was nursing my son. (not that I used that for my baby) Or maybe her milk is still coming in like a humans has to, if it is still mostly colosrum then that would not leave very much milk to see just yet. If it were my dog I would try the beer, I know it sounds bad but the yeast in beer really does increase production. Good luck, i would think that the pups would let you know they aren't eating if it were that bad. |
The most important thing is to make sure the momma is eating. Sometimes you have to hand feed them the first few days. Make sure the momma eats about 4 times a day with the last feeding being around 10 p.m. Are both puppies able to latch on and stay on? |

I already had that shot done, and they do latch and stay on. I had a little one last litter that I had to stay and watch. I will try the cottage cheese tonight and see if that helps and tomorrow I will try to mix up that pudding. Roseygirl you want to make her drunk, lol no just kidding. I feel so odd to buy beer. It just might work though. She only eats when I am around it is like she wants me to babysit while she eats. So I do that about three times a day I will do it one more time. Thanks I will let you all know I also will get them to the fvet for dew claws and tails I think on thursday |

You should be giving your female calcium supplements at this point. Also, familiarize yourself with the signs of eclampsia. (Deadly condition when the pups are draining too much calcium from mom.) |
They all go to the vet tomorrow, to be checked and I did give her cottage cheese today she loved it even though my breeder sais likewise about it. |
What kind of person are you to not have beer on hand? He-he, just kidding. :D As I was writing it I felt wrong just suggesting it, and I am sure you are all wondering what kind of person I am to know that it helps while you are a nursing mom, right? (I NEVER let my children consume THAT type of milk, just so you know) Anyway, if those pups are not acting like they are starving then I would think you may be worrying for nothing, hopefully that is the case, for their sake. The yeast from the beer really does help bring their milk in. I hand feed my Mommy's if I don't they don't eat and we have a problem. This way I no what each one is eating. |
No Roseygirl, I didnt think anything bad about I thought it was kinda funny, lol SHe is doing well I gave her cottage it made her go to the bathroom a lot but all is well and the puppies look, good and are gaining weight. As always thanks everyone Christina Quote:
