Time of Heat My female Lela is having her 2nd heat very soon at the age of 15 months, I know that the best time for the breeding is from one week until 12 days after the heat, I wonder if I should isoler my male Gigo from her until the best time of breeding has come. Or, I should let them do it all naturally as I keep both at home all the time. I am eager to have them producing babies, what should I do in order to assist? Thanks for your advices in advance. |

Sounds like this is a first for you. The best thing for you to do in order to assist is to be prepared. I have used this website Canine Reproduction Video and Book on Breeding and Whelping dogs by Debbie Jensen for dog breeders and Whelping Supplies needed to deliver puppies. , and highly reccomend it to anyone that asks for help on breeding, whelping, and/or weaning puppies. It gives great help on all of these subjects & more. Definitely keep Gigo & Lela separated and/or under close supervision during her entire 3 week heat cycle. They should only be "together" at the times of breeding, and even then you will want/need to be with them to supervise and/or assist to prevent injury to your male (or either of them) should either of them make a wrong move while they are tied. You'll only want them to tie once a day....maybe every other day during the fertile days. Any more than that could deplete the males sperm supply for when you really need it. Having only had one litter myself so far, I am no expert, but these are things I have read here on YT and from the websites & books I have read. The best suggestion I can give is to read as much information as you can....and then read it all again and again. Good luck to you and do keep us posted..............and Welcome to Yorkie Talk!!! |
thx. Thank you for your kindest answer. Yes, it is the very first time for me and I would keep them together if no advise is provided because I thought all happening in nature themselves. Your information is so appreciated. As I am unemployed, I stay with them 24 hours per day and so I might keep one in the kitchen and another with me during the night at the heat cycle in order to keep them separated. Thanks again. |
My male will not touch a female in heat until day 12-14. I know everyone says to breed on 10 but he will not. He has produced puppies everytime so I guess he knows what he is doing..lol |

Just an FYI....you may also be in for some hectic, trying, and loud days and sleep deprived days and/or nights. The males can get pretty annoying wanting to get to the female. They will bark, cry, whine, scratch at doors, jump and/or climb, or what ever when they don't get what they want. I ended up putting my male in his belly band and my female in her panties/diaper AND a onsie baby shirt just so I could let them be together for awhile for some peace and rest on my part. It worked for me, but I've heard stories of them being able to undress each other when they really, really, want to. So be very, very, careful. |
Very good advice so far. I would recommend sending your male to a friends home for the first few days of the heat if it's possible. And then bringing him home only long enough to do the deed. Allow them to be together only when you want them to breed and only after your female is ready to "stand" for the male. Breeding once every other day while she is receptive has always given me the best results. It also reduces the number of days you will use to chart the arrival. This doesn't seem important now but it will in about sixty days. |
..........another note: Sometimes the males will be interested in nothing else except the female; meanning they won't eat. So be sure that your male eats regularly while your female is in heat, even if you have to hand feed him. |
