My Yorkies were "stuck"!! after Valentine's Day Oh My God!! My son woke me up early today because my 9 month old male Yorkie and my 2 years old female Yorkie butts' were stuck!!! Yup, it looks like we're gonna have pups soon!!! When I was given the female Yorkie last year I was told that she was spayed, so I didn't bothered neutering my male pup (I thought he couldn't really do much before his 1st birthday). Not sure if to take my female Yorkie to the vet tomorrow... Times are rough and I don't really have the cash flow for this type of expensive routine. Does anyone know when would it be a good time to take her in for a check-up? Back in the days ....my grandma didn't breed but whenever her dog would get pregnant, she would let the natural flow of nature take charge, but I've been reading so much information about dogs pregnancy and their complications and it's kinda scary. This really took me by surprise and all I know is that I will be there for my beautiful Mimi and the "munchkins" to come. |
You are saying that you had no idea she was in heat???? How could you not notice? Getting "butt stuck" (which is called tied) is NOT the first sign of being in heat. I am sorry, but if you didn't notice her in heat before now, I am afraid you have a WHOLE LOT to learn before this girl gives birth. I don't mean to be harsh, but good grief... there are SIGNS of her being in heat. Hasn't the male been following her around and sniffing her, trying to mount her???? Hasn't she been licking herself?? I think you need to start reading and saving because there are so many things that can happen and you need to be prepared and MUCH MORE observant of her when it comes time for these babies. Sorry, I re-read what I wrote and it does sound harsh and I am sorry for that. I cannot think of another way to say it. |
With the toy breeds, it's not safe to let nature take its course. If you allow this pregnancy to go on, you must educate yourself and be prepared when whelping time comes. The gestation period is (+ or _) 63 days so you have about 9 weeks to get ready. She cannot be left alone as the time approaches and will need help in tearing the sacs and cutting the cords (not to mention any possible complications). If you don't think you can be prepared and available for her, the pregnancy should be terminated. Many things can and do go wrong that could result in you losing your girl and/or the pups. |
I see you said times are tough and you don't have the cash flow for this kind of expensive routing I think you need to be very aware that it is a lot more expensive to whelp and raise a litter than it is to go for check up and spay. You need to start saving up an emergency fund. It is not uncommon at all to be out $1,000.00 or more for an emergency CSection. Start studying too about whelping a litter. Good luck to you. |
Just because they were stuck does not automatically mean she will have pups. How much does the female and male weigh? If she is nice size then I see no reason why she could not deliver puppies safely, but as others have said you always have to be prepared when things go wrong. Once I had a male tie with one of my females on the first day of her heat so I know it can happen. Of course the breeding did not take because it was way to early in her heat cycle. I know puppies like to hump other dogs even if the other dog is not in heat so I can understand your confusion if you thought your female was spayed. Is she swollen or bleeding any now? Also, I had a friend once that has a female St. Bernard and she would let the males breed her anytime, whether she was in heat or not so I know that it is possible. So I wonder if you female could really be spayed and was just being tolerant of the male puppy or if she is really in heat. Maybe she is having a silent heat. Whatever the outcome I wish you the best of luck and I hope you keep us updated. |
Thanks so much for trying to understand, bjh And to everyone else, sorry if I don't know the correct terminology of animal mating rituals. Actually, I wrote what my son told me when he woke me up, although I didn't know the correct word for it anyways. I have noticed that the female has been licking herself this past week or so, even people have asked me. My male puppy doesn't seem to care (they are always together and he always follows her around- nothing different). Though last night I did noticed that she was trying to hump him and then he would try to hump her, but then he backs away and then she would get very angry with him (which I found funny giving the situation). Wish I could just erase my thread cause it wasn't my intentions of creating a "chaos" or concern. Just want some feedback, don't need the judgment. I've read about puppy mills and those bad breeders out there with no experience. I am not a breeder and never wanted to be one. If it turns out she is pregnant I will make sure she gets the best possible care from me and her Vet. Thanks! |
I have nothing to add...I have to agree with all the other responses. |
I hope you don't think I was trying to create chaos. But when I read your post you sounded rather pleased about it the way you puncuated it. and rather non chalaunt (sp?). That is probably why I came out so harsh myself. Honestly, I think most will tell you on here that I am the one who always tries to keep things calm. I am sorry I sounded so harsh and hope you will forgive me for that. It is just so frustrating to continually read about "bad inexperienced breeders" (your words) who have not spayed or nuetered thier pets and end up with them pregnant and don't know how it could have happened. Accidents DO happen (even to me) but you do have to be prepared for the expense and care she will need. |

Pregnancy care, puppy care, possible c-section......yup, it could become a very expensive mistake. For heavens sake, I hope you are keeping them apart now and for the next three weeks. They will continue to mate so if by luck she didn't get pregnant this morning, she certainly will if they are unsupervised. |

You were told that the female was spayed? How much does the female weigh? |
