What's the Best Progesterone Level? We are currently away from home to breed with a stud. My girl is on day 9 today. Yesterday I took her to the stud for the first time. The stud's owner said she didn't think my girl was ready because her discharge is still very red (dripping even). She is flagging, standing, all that, but she had a point. So I took her to a vet and had the progesterone test done and it came back 6.0. My research tells me this is prime time (5 - 15) and she is actually ready. I don't want to waste her breedings and everyone's time, so I would love to know what you all think. Thanks so much for your advice. |
I do my first breeding when the level is 5 or 6 and it has taken every time. |
You are looking for the date that it reaches 5 ng or slightly above. That indicated ovulation. Then you want to do the breeding within 24-48 hours because the egg will be mature at that time. She is ready whether her discharge agrees or not! Regardless, even if you hit her right at ovulation, the sperm will live for around 5 days so they will be hanging out waiting for that egg to mature and viola, conception. I have never missed a breeding doing a breeding around 36 hours from the day she was right at 5 ng give or take (I got the test results about 12-15 hrs after the blood draw that resulted in the level and then bred the next day). |
