Pregnant - Doesn't Like Her Kibble Okay, I am desperately needing some help from some breeders out there. My yorkie is 36 days pregnant, and she doesn't like any of the puppy kibble that I have tried to give her. Can anyone help? I have tried Science Diet, Purina Puppy, and Pedigree Puppy. Any help is greatly appreciated. Also, is it normal for a Yorkie to look "big" while only 36 days? We are scheduled for an x-ray at the end of the month. She is due on 3/7. Again, I do appreciate any advice. |
None of the dog foods you mentions are quality foods. Some of the ones I recommend are Chicken Soup Puppy, Canidae, Solid Gold or Natural Balance. I always add a little canned Pedigree Lamb and Rice Puppy food to their dry food. How much does your expectant momma weigh? It is not unusual for them to start getting a belly 5 1/2 week along, especially if it is going to be a bigger litter. Best wishes for a safe whelping. |
She weighed in at 5lbs. 4oz before she got pregnant. This was an unwanted pregnancy because it was her first heat. I did everything possible to try to keep them seperated, but nothing worked. I feel so bad about it, and am now just trying to do all of the right things. I will go and get her some other food today. |
I know it is sad that she got pregnant on her first heat but unfortunately it happens more often than we like. Most of the time the momma can deliver with no problems but you always have to be prepared for the worse. The biggest problem with them still being young and growing is that their bones are still a bit soft and the younger moms have a harder time dilating enough to pass the puppy. It is especially harder if they are carrying only one puppy because the puppy sometimes can get too big for them to pass. If your girl is already getting a big belly then she will probably have at least 3 or 4. I do hope you will keep us posted and feel free to ask any questions. There is so much to learn about breeding, whelping, and rearing a litter of babies. |
Dang I hate this computer! Anyhoo...Vet told me because Princess wouldnt eat dry food, do whatever i gotta do to get her eat! Since I am not very good at standing on my head :pI have been giving her the Nutro Ultra canned food and then I am grinding her dry kibble up and mixing it in too. I think this may spoil her, but she is gaining weight now. This is our first and ONLY litter, becaue I am not a breeder, she is not standard quality for yorkie and was only eligible for limited registration, which I dont think i will bother with. (i am NOT SELLING PUPPIES) I think if you switch to a good quality dog food your baby will eat it. Survival mode has to kick in sooner or later, i would think... |
Thanks everyone. I really appreciate the advice. I just had a litter of "Shorkies" (Shih-tzu mom and Yorkie dad). She didn't have a problem with her pregnancy, however, when it came time to deliever, she had so many puppies that her uterus wouldn't contract. She had to have a C-section and all 6 babies lived. They all did great and are at there new homes now. Now that Ellie, my yorkie, is pregnant by the same sire, I am concerned that she too will have too many puppies. I am only hoping for 3, but you never know. I am now calling my sire, "Fertile Myrtle". But, I am really scared about the delivery. Since I didn't have the standard delivery with my previous litter, I am concerned about not being able to get a puppy out if it gets stuck. We are going for X-rays at the end of the month, but I don't know if that will make me feel any better about it or not. Ellie is my baby. I don't want anything to happen to her. I'm a nervous reck. |

I know what you mean, I can't imagine a bigger litter......:cool: Oh well, I guess I will know for sure by the end of the month when we have the x-rays done. I will keep posting to this thread and let you know what the vet says. |
